Java Moss

Lighting and CO2:

Extremely versatile. It can survive in dim, low-light tanks or thrive under intense aquascaping lights (which will make it grow compact and dense). It requires absolutely zero CO2 injection to survive.

Nutrition and Substrate:

It has no true roots, only rhizoids for grip. It absorbs nutrients straight from the water column. It is an incredibly low-demand plant that will happily survive off the natural nitrates and waste produced by your fish.

Water Chemistry:

Bulletproof. Survives from chilly 15°C up to warm 28°C. Highly tolerant of massive pH swings (5.0 to 8.0).

Space Management and Placement:

Never bury it. Tie small portions tightly to driftwood, rocks, or stainless-steel mesh using cotton thread or superglue. It will eventually attach itself and spread wildly, creating a beautifully unkempt, natural forest floor or weeping branches look.

Trimming:

It will grow into a massive, tangled mess if left alone. You can ruthlessly rip handfuls of it out of the tank. WARNING: Trimming it with scissors underwater is dangerous for aquascapes, as every microscopic millimeter clipping that floats away will stick to a new rock and grow a new moss bush.

Risks and Diseases:

1. THE DETRITUS SPONGE: Because it is so dense, it traps massive amounts of fish waste and uneaten food. You MUST gently wave your hand over it or siphon it during water changes to dislodge the trapped dirt, otherwise, the center of the moss will rot and die.

2. HAIR ALGAE DEATH TRAP: If long, green hair algae gets tangled inside your Java Moss, it is virtually impossible to untangle. You usually have to throw the infected clump away.
