Description

Geographical Origin & Habitat:

This specific botanical marvel does not exist in nature. Echinodorus × barthii is a legendary, foundational commercial hybrid created specifically for the global aquarium trade, originally discovered and cultivated by H. Barth in Germany. It was meticulously crossbred from wild South American Amazon Sword stock, primarily derived from Echinodorus uruguayensis. In the aquarium, it behaves identically to its wild ancestors: acting as a deeply rooted, massive amphibious rosette plant highly adapted to survive submerged.

Taxonomy & Genetics:

Scientifically classified within the Alismataceae family, the "×" in its name correctly denotes its status as a highly stabilized, complex commercial hybrid. Taxonomically, it is globally famed under the trade names "Double Red Sword" or "Melon Sword." Genetically, it inherited the massive, sprawling structural size of its South American parents. Crucially, its DNA possesses an explosive mutation that absolutely forces the massive, continuous production of heavily saturated dark-red, maroon, and deep purple anthocyanin pigments.

Physical Structure:

The architectural structure of the E. × barthii sword is overwhelmingly dominant, incredibly heavy, and massively sprawling. It is a gigantic rosette plant completely lacking vertical stems. The foundation is an enormous, highly fleshy, woody subterranean rhizome that deploys an aggressive, deep-reaching white root system. The leaves erupt directly from the crown on distinct, thick petioles. The foliage is the defining structural feature: broadly elliptic to ovate, massive (capable of reaching 30-40 cm), and gently ruffled.

Color & Texture:

The coloration is absolutely explosive, breathtakingly vibrant, and visually commanding. Grown submerged under intense lighting, the massive, broad leaves shift dynamically: the youngest, newly emerged leaves erupt from the core as a blindingly bright, translucent deep red or dark maroon. As the massive leaves age and get pushed outward, they fade into a dark, moody olive-green, creating a spectacular two-toned visual core. The texture is intensely rigid, heavily leathery, and smooth, completely lacking any dimples or hammering.

Care and observations

Lighting & CO2:

It is an extremely resilient, heavy-feeding titan. While it will effortlessly survive in low-light, shaded aquariums, its spectacular genetics will completely fail; the massive leaves will lose their brilliant red color, revert entirely to a dull muddy green, and stretch aggressively upward. To unlock its compact, laterally sprawling rosette shape and blindingly bright dark-red "Double Red" colors, blasting, high-intensity LED lighting is absolutely mandatory. Pressurized CO2 drastically accelerates its massive, explosive growth.

Nutrition & Substrate:

As a colossal, elite Amazon Sword hybrid, E. × barthii is a terrifyingly aggressive, obligate root feeder. Its massive root system strictly demands a very deep (minimum 7 cm / 3 inches), highly mature, heavily nutrient-dense substrate. It absolutely demands premium aquasoil heavily enriched with iron and macro-nutrient root tabs directly beneath the massive tuber to fuel its intense red pigmentation. If starved of root nutrients, the giant red leaves will quickly turn pale yellow, lose all red color, and dissolve.

Water Chemistry:

Originating from highly stabilized German nursery conditions, it is practically invincible regarding standard water parameters. It thrives effortlessly in heated tropical aquariums (22-28°C) and is exceptionally adaptable, comfortably tolerating both soft, acidic blackwater and rock-hard, highly alkaline tap water (pH 6.0 - 8.0). The single most critical environmental requirement is absolute chemical stability. It drastically prefers stable parameters over perfectly optimized ones. It demands strong water flow to clean its massive leaves.

Space Management & Placement:

Due to its absolute monstrous size (capable of reaching 30-40 cm in both height and diameter), massive ovate leaves, and dominant dark-red core, E. × barthii is strictly a solitary, commanding centerpiece for large aquariums (minimum 200 liters). It MUST be planted singularly, completely isolated in the exact center midground or background. Because it grows as a massive, sprawling rosette, it will rapidly form an impenetrable red-green umbrella that violently shadows and chokes out any smaller plants placed nearby.

Pruning:

Pruning is a simple, massive, and highly necessary procedure. Never attempt to trim the thick, broad leaves in half; the cut edge will instantly turn black, rot, and destroy the aesthetic. To prune dead, yellowing, or excessively massive older green leaves that are shadowing the tank, you must reach down to the absolute base of the massive rosette and cleanly slice the thick petiole directly at the crown. It rarely spreads via runners; instead, it slowly forms a massive, impenetrable core.

Risks & Diseases:

The absolute greatest threat to the E. × barthii sword is nutrient starvation and Green Spot Algae (GSA). Because the massive, broad red leaves are long-lasting, they act as massive landing pads for devastating Green Spot Algae if phosphate levels drop or light is too intense without adequate CO2. Once GSA aggressively spots the massive leaves, it cannot be cleaned off and ruins the deep red coloration. If root nutrients (especially Iron) are exhausted, the plant will violently cannibalize itself.
