Mystery Snail
Pomacea bridgesii
The Colorful Golf Ball (2 inches / 5 cm). The Mystery Snail is the most popular freshwater snail in the world, renowned for its massive size, incredibly vivid shell colors (Gold, Ivory, Magenta, Blue, Purple), and incredibly fast, active personality. They breathe both water and air using a fascinating extendable 'snorkel' tube. Unlike pest snails, they will NOT eat your healthy, live aquarium plants, and their reproduction is extremely easy to control. They absolutely demand hard, alkaline, calcium-rich water to survive.

Care and observations
Water Chemistry and Setup:
The Calcium Eaters. You CANNOT keep Mystery Snails in soft, acidic water (like Amazon biotope or high-tech planted tanks with active soils and low pH). Their thick shells are composed entirely of calcium carbonate. If the pH drops below 7.0, the acidic water will literally, chemically dissolve and pit their shell away over time, creating horrific holes that expose their internal organs, leading to a slow, agonizing death. They MUST be kept in hard, alkaline tap water (pH 7.5 - 8.5) with a high GH. You MUST keep a tight lid on the tank; they are notorious escape artists that will climb out to explore and dry out on your floor.
Feeding and Diet:
The Voracious Scavenger. They are often mistakenly sold purely as 'Algae Eaters'. While they will eat soft algae and biofilm, they are actually massive scavengers. They actively hunt down leftover fish food, dead fish, and decaying plant leaves. Because their massive bodies grow so fast, you MUST feed them heavy calcium-fortified diets: Algae wafers, sinking pellets, and most importantly, blanched vegetables high in calcium like Spinach, Kale, and Zucchini. Dropping a boiled Cuttlebone into the filter is a common trick to provide shell calcium.
Copper and Toxicity Warning:
The Death Metal. Like all invertebrates, Mystery Snails are violently allergic and fatally sensitive to Copper (Cu). Any fish medication used to treat Ich (White Spot) or heavy chemical plant fertilizers will instantly poison and kill the snail. Never medicate a tank with a snail inside.
Breeding and Eggs:
The Pink Dry Clutch. They are not hermaphrodites (you need a male and female) and they are NOT pest snails. If a female breeds, she will wait until night, climb entirely out of the water, and lay a massive, hard, bright-pink or chalky egg clutch (resembling a raspberry) glued to the dry glass or the lid, inches above the waterline. This makes controlling their population the easiest in the hobby: if you don't want 100 baby snails, simply grab the pink clutch, crush it, and throw it away.
Risks and Compatibility:
The Antennae Nipping Torture. They have incredibly long, flowing, majestic tentacles (antennae) that they wave around to feel and smell their environment. You must NEVER keep them with aggressive, curious, or fin-nipping fish (like Tiger Barbs, Bettas, Loaches, or Pufferfish). The fish will mistake the snail's delicate antennae for live bloodworms and viciously bite them off. Without its antennae, the terrified snail will permanently lock itself inside its shell and starve to death from fear.

- Bassa (molto resistente)
- Calcium and minerals
- Critica.
