Snowball Shrimp

Neocaridina zhangjiajiensis var. White

The Neocaridina 'White Pearl' (Snowball Shrimp) is one of the most fascinating dwarf shrimp. It features a completely translucent ice-white livery that allows you to see the internal organs. The name "Snowball" comes from the round white eggs that the females carry. It is a "tank": hardy, tolerates normal (hard) tap water and forgives many mistakes. Never mix it with other Neocaridina (like Red Cherry) or they will crossbreed, creating brown offspring.

Description

Copper, The Only Mortal Enemy (The Slaughter of the Old Pipe Futile Blind Deaf Mute):

White Pearls forgive incompetence, dirty filters and temperature swings. But they DO NOT forgive COPPER. If your house has old copper pipes and you use warm tap water for changes, you could introduce lethal micro-traces. Likewise, fish medicines based on copper sulfate (against Ich) will kill them instantly. Always use a chelating water conditioner.

Care and observations

The Curse of Hybridization (The Legacy of Mud Futile Blind Deaf Mute):

The sacred rule of Neocaridina breeding is only one: DO NOT MIX COLORS. Even if the White Pearl is a slightly different species from the Red Cherry, they belong to the same genus and will inevitably crossbreed. The children (and grandchildren) will instantly lose their color mutations, regressing to the original "Wild" coloration: they will all become an anonymous muddy gray-brown, ruining years of selective breeding. A species-only tank is mandatory.
