Wine Red shrimp

Geographical Origin & Biotope:

The Wine Red Shrimp (a variant of Caridina cf. cantonensis) does not exist in the wild. It is a spectacular, highly advanced, entirely captive-bred Taiwan Bee mutation originating from the original Bee Shrimp lines of southern China. The captive "biotope" requires the absolute highest standard of extreme water purity, dense layers of specialized aquatic mosses, and massive accumulations of decomposing leaf litter slowly breaking down in highly oxygenated, deeply acidic, and artificially softened water.

Taxonomy & Morphology:

Scientifically classified within the Atyidae family, it is a stunning, biologically hyper-delicate dwarf shrimp. Morphologically, fully mature adults reach a maximum of roughly 2.5 centimeters (1.0 inch) in length. It possesses the deeply compact, heavily armored exoskeleton typical of Caridina. The "Wine Red" is a specific, iconic pattern mutation within the "Taiwan Bee" lineage, selectively bred to express vast, stark, brilliantly contrasting blocks of completely solid, opaque dark red and bright white pigment, similar to the Panda but in red.

Social Behavior:

They are highly intelligent, entirely non-aggressive, and deeply communal benthic (bottom-dwelling) invertebrates. They are completely harmless and absolutely MUST be kept in a sizable colony (absolute minimum 10-15 individuals) to establish critical security, disperse shyness, and encourage breeding. In the aquarium, they possess a fascinating, intensely busy, and constant scavenging lifestyle. They spend 100% of their entire day continuously crawling over every square inch of the substrate, specifically focusing on complex moss structures, meticulously picking off microscopic biofilm.

Coloration & Sexual Dimorphism:

Sexual dimorphism is subtle and difficult to discern due to their intensely thick, opaque coloration; mature females possess a slightly deeper, more rounded abdomen, but the "saddle" (developing eggs) is entirely invisible through the opaque shell. The coloration of the Wine Red Shrimp is breathtaking, legendary, and profoundly striking: the body is completely covered in an intensely thick, completely opaque pigment. The pattern is completely characterized by massive, solid, alternating vertical blocks of blindingly bright snow-white and deeply saturated, glowing blood-red or dark crimson.

Tank Setup:

The aquarium architecture MUST flawlessly, unconditionally replicate a pristine, fiercely cool, and intensely planted mountain stream. A minimum 30-liter (8-gallon) tank is required for a dedicated colony. The absolute most critical requirement is extreme water buffering; a high-quality active, buffering aquatic soil (like ADA Amazonia) is absolutely, unconditionally mandatory to lock the pH below 6.0. The tank MUST feature massive thickets of fine-leaved plants, specifically dense carpets of aquatic moss (Taiwan Moss, Fissidens), and abundant Indian Almond leaves (Catappa).

Diet & Feeding:

They are highly specialized, continuous scavengers that feed exclusively by meticulously picking microscopic biofilm, algae, and decaying organic matter off surfaces. In the aquarium, their diet MUST be meticulously controlled. While they constantly graze on natural biofilm, they strictly MUST be fed a heavily vegetable-based, ultra-premium micro-diet. Daily offerings of specialized Taiwan Bee sinking pellets, massive amounts of powdered bacter-AE (to generate biofilm), and blanched organic vegetables (spinach, nettle leaves) are unconditionally mandatory for survival.

Water Quality:

Taiwan Bees are the absolute most delicate freshwater dwarf shrimp in the hobby, possessing extreme, unforgiving water requirements. They strictly demand COOL water (20-23°C / 68-73°F); temperatures above 25°C will instantly suppress their immune system and cause massive die-offs. Crucially, they absolutely require ultra-soft water (GH 4-6, KH 0-1) and a deeply acidic pH (5.5 - 6.5). They possess absolute zero tolerance for dissolved organic waste; using pure RO/DI water remineralized with specific Taiwan Bee salts (GH+) is unconditionally mandatory.

Compatibility & Tankmates:

Compatibility is strictly limited by their extreme water parameter requirements, microscopic size, profound delicacy, and massive financial value. They are the perfect, spectacular centerpiece for a dedicated, single-species high-grade shrimp biotope. They MUST NEVER be housed with any standard community fish; even small micro-fish will stress them and ruthlessly hunt their microscopic babies. They should strictly be housed absolutely alone, though a completely species-only tank is strongly, unconditionally recommended for breeding.

Aquarium Breeding:

Breeding is possible but highly challenging, requiring absolute perfection and immense stability in their extreme water parameters. They are direct developers. Triggered by highly stable, cool, acidic water, mature females will carry 15-25 dark red eggs under their abdomen for roughly 4-5 weeks. When they hatch, the babies emerge as microscopic, fully formed replicas of the adults. The Taiwan Bee babies are profoundly delicate, vasty more sensitive than standard CRS; massive tangles of moss and powdered biofilm supplements (like Bacter-AE) are absolutely mandatory to ensure survival.

Risks & Diseases:

The absolute greatest physical risk is rapid, lethal toxicity; they possess absolute zero tolerance for Copper, heavy metals, chemical medications, or even trace Ammonia. The use of pure RO/DI water remineralized with specific Taiwan Bee salts is unconditionally mandatory; tap water is an instant death sentence. The second major risk is lethal physiological collapse caused by incorrect parameters; keeping them in warm water (above 25°C) or alkaline water (pH above 6.5) will rapidly wipe out the entire colony. Finally, active buffering soil is unconditionally required.
