Crystal Red Shrimp (CRS)

Caridina cantonensis

The Holy Grail of Nano Shrimp (2-3 cm). The Crystal Red Shrimp is a stunning red-and-white mutation of the wild Bee Shrimp, originally isolated in Japan. It completely revolutionized the dwarf shrimp hobby with its striking candy-cane appearance. However, it is notoriously fragile. Unlike the bulletproof 'Cherry Shrimp' (Neocaridina), the CRS (Caridina) is highly demanding, requiring extremely soft, acidic water, active buffering substrates, and pristine conditions to survive and breed.

Care and observations

Water Chemistry and Setup:

The Strict Caridina Protocol. You CANNOT use tap water. They STRICTLY require Reverse Osmosis (RO) water remineralized with specific Caridina GH+ salts. The substrate must be an Active Soil (like ADA Amazonia or Stratum) that naturally buffers the pH down to an acidic 5.8-6.5 and keeps the KH (Carbonate Hardness) at 0-1. If you attempt to keep them in hard alkaline tap water, they will fail to molt and slowly die off.

Feeding and Diet:

Constant Biofilm Grazers. They spend their entire lives constantly picking at surfaces with their tiny claws, eating microscopic biofilm, algae, and detritus. Feed them specialized dwarf shrimp pellets, blanched spinach, and nettle. Adding dried Indian Almond Leaves (Catappa leaves) is mandatory; as the leaves break down, they release healing tannins and grow massive amounts of infusoria for baby shrimp to eat.

Copper and Toxicity Warning:

The Instant Death Sentence. Invertebrates are hyper-sensitive to heavy metals. Even trace amounts of Copper (found in many liquid plant fertilizers, fish medications, or old household pipes) will instantly poison and wipe out an entire colony of expensive shrimp. Never use copper-based Ich medicine in a shrimp tank.

Breeding and Grading:

The Grading Obsession. Crystal Reds are graded based on the opacity and ratio of their white bands versus red. Lower grades (C, B, A) have more red and translucent white. Higher grades (SS, SSS, PRL - Pure Red Line) are almost entirely solid, opaque porcelain white with tiny red dots, and are highly expensive. Females carry the eggs under their belly (berried) for 30 days. Babies (shrimplets) hatch as perfect microscopic replicas and require thick forests of Java Moss to hide and feed safely.

Risks and Compatibility:

The 'Species-Only' Mandate. Do not keep them with fish. Even the smallest, most peaceful 'nano-fish' (like Neon Tetras or Rasboras) will actively hunt down, kill, and eat the expensive baby shrimplets, destroying your colony. Only keep them with snails or the 100% shrimp-safe Otocinclus Catfish. THE HEAT DANGER: They are a cool-water species. If your summer tank temperatures exceed 78°F (25-26°C), they will suffer bacterial infections and die en masse. A cooling fan or chiller is often required in warm climates.

Molting
Muta frequentemente durante la crescita. Non rimuovere gli esuvii bianchi dalla vasca, le caridine li mangeranno per recuperare calcio prezioso.
Reproduction
Riproduzione diretta senza fase larvale in acqua salmastra.
