Panda Loach
Yaoshania pachilus
Tiny hillstream specialist. Juveniles sport a stunning black-and-white 'panda' pattern that completely vanishes into drab brown as they age. Requires cold, hyper-oxygenated water.

Description
Geographic Origin and Biotope: Endemic to the Dayao Shan mountain range in southern China. Inhabits shallow, fast-flowing, crystal-clear mountain streams over gravel and smooth boulders saturated with dissolved oxygen.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Gastromyzontidae (5-6 cm max). Elongated body, ventrally located mouth designed to scrape biofilm while clinging to rocks, and large pectoral fins to counter extreme water flow.
Social Behavior: Highly gregarious and diurnal. MUST be kept in groups (5-6+). Males engage in harmless territorial 'dancing', constantly grazing on rock surfaces.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Sold young at high prices for their stark, perfect black-and-white bands ('panda' look). THE CATCH: as they grow past 1 inch, the pattern fragments into a highly camouflaged, drab mottled brown/gray. Females are plumper.
Care and observations
Tank Setup: Requires a 'River Manifold' or hillstream setup. Wavemakers/powerheads directed over smooth river stones to create unidirectional flow. High lighting to encourage biofilm ('Aufwuchs') growth on the rocks. Zero CO2 injection.
Feeding: Benthic micro-predator/grazer. Feeds on 'Aufwuchs' (biofilm, diatoms, and micro-crustaceans). WILL NOT EAT HAIR ALGAE. Must be supplemented with live brine shrimp, daphnia, and high-quality Spirulina pellets.
Water Quality: THE MAIN CHALLENGE. This is a subtropical, cool-water fish. Temperature MUST NEVER EXCEED 23-24°C (75°F). Ideal is 18-22°C. If kept at tropical 26°C+, they suffer hypoxia and die. pH 7.0-8.0, zero ammonia.
Compatibility: Hillstream biotope only. Great with White Cloud Mountain Minnows, Danios, and other hillstream loaches. Will starve to death in a standard community tank without current, outcompeted by Corydoras or Plecos.
Reproduction: Documented but rare. Egg scatterers in gravel trenches.
Risks: Summer heat waves causing fatal hypoxia. Starvation in pristine, new tanks lacking biofilm. Hyper-sensitive to copper medications, algaecides, and liquid fertilizers ('scaleless' fish).
