Coral Red Platy

Xiphophorus maculatus var. Coral Red

The Coral Red Platy is an ode to absolute red. This small fish is a Central American tank: squat, perpetually hungry, and constantly in motion. It is the perfect guest for community aquariums with hard tap water. However, its reproductive ease hides a dark side: they are ruthless predators of their own children. As soon as a female gives birth to dozens of live young, the entire tank (including the mother) turns into a hunting swarm to devour them. Either provide a tank exploding with vegetation (e.g. Java moss), or the brood will be wiped out in less than an hour.

Description

The Osmotic Prison (Sweet Poisoning Futile Deaf Mute):

A Platy in acidic water (pH 6.5) is a suffocating Platy. Their kidneys collapse trying to retain minerals in an environment devoid of them. They will start rubbing violently (Flashing) against leaves and stones, and then close themselves in a corner covered in milky mucus until they die. Hard tap water is essential.

Care and observations

The Torture of the Breeding Box (The Plastic Coffin Futile Blind):

The use of plastic floating "breeding boxes" is medieval cruelty. By isolating a pregnant and terrified female in 10 cubic cm under harsh light, you will cause panic contractions. She will give birth to premature dead fetuses (yellow eggs) or die herself from cardiac stress. Let her free. Real plants are the only acceptable delivery room.
