Description
Geographic Origin and Biotope: Endemic to a tiny range in the Rio Uaupés, upper Rio Negro. Water pH below 4.0, near-zero conductivity — essentially distilled water stained black by humic and fulvic acids from leaf litter.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Monotypic genus described in 2004. Microscopic characin (max 1.5-2 cm), compact and robust. Tiny adipose fin typical of Characidae.
Social Behavior: Obligate schooler in groups of 10-15+ among bottom leaf litter. Alone, it hides and becomes anorexic.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: A microscopic jewel: transparent amber-gold body with intense black lateral band widening to a broad caudal base spot. Luminous yellow-gold iridescent stripe above. Faint red in caudal.
Care and observations
Tank Setup: Dedicated blackwater nano (30-60 liters). Thick leaf litter floor. Tannin-leaching woods. Very dim lighting. Tea-colored water. Sponge filter, no significant current.
Feeding: Micro-predator in leaf litter. Accepts freshly hatched artemia nauplii, micro-worms, crushed fine dry food. Normal granules are too large for the tiny mouth.
Water Quality: EXTREME, non-negotiable. Pure RO water: GH 0-1, KH 0, pH 3.5-5.5, conductivity under 20 µS/cm. In neutral or hard water it refuses food and dies of osmotic stress. Peat filtration essential.
Compatibility: Only extreme blackwater micro-fish: Cardinals, Nannostomus, Poecilocharax, small Apistogramma.
Reproduction: Documented but rare. Microscopic eggs in leaf litter. Fry need infusoria for 2 weeks before artemia nauplii.
Risks: Osmotic shock from hard water is fatal. Tap water is to this fish what acid is to a marine fish. Impulse purchases without a stabilized blackwater tank are a death sentence. The €20-50 per specimen price should discourage this but often doesn't.
