Trichopodus leerii
The Pearl Gourami (*Trichopodus leerii*) is unanimously considered the ambassador of grace in fishkeeping. Its leaf-shaped body, very laterally compressed, is coffee-colored and literally dusted with thousands of tiny white dots like pearls, crossed by a sharp black zig-zag stripe. Healthy or breeding adult males develop a spectacular fiery red or bright orange chest and their anal fins extend into wispy filaments. Endowed with iconic pelvic fins modified into long thread-like tentacles that they use as sensors to explore the environment, they are wonderfully peaceful labyrinth fish, ideal as a visual centerpiece for mature and well-planted community aquariums.

Water Gunslingers (Insect Hunting):
An incredible and often little-known natural behavior is their insectivorous instinct. If there is a small insect resting on a plant out of the water or on the top glass of the lid, the Pearl Gourami positions itself below the surface and, contracting its mouth, "spits" a violent and very precise jet of water to knock the insect into the tank and devour it.
Care and observations
Do Not Let Their Hands Be Cut Off (The Tactile Tentacles):
The most beloved physical characteristic of Gouramis are the two very long thread-like ventral fins with which they "touch" rocks, glass and other fish to explore. It is forbidden, on pain of extreme suffering for the fish, to insert them with Tiger Barbs, aggressive Tetras or Central American Cichlids. These fish would mistake the Gourami's tentacles for worms, biting them off and condemning it to serious infections as well as very strong psychological stress.
The Very Gentle but Slow Giant:
Despite becoming quite large fish (12 cm / 5 inches and very wide in profile), they are extremely slow to eat and shy. If you put them in an aquarium with fish that are frantic at mealtime (like Zebra Danios or hungry Angelfish), the Pearl Gouramis will stay in a frightened corner and slowly die of malnutrition. Always make sure they manage to eat at the surface.
Still Water (Turn down very strong filters):
They come from blackwater swamps with no water flow. A tank with powerful water jets from the filter, wave makers or vigorous waterfalls will tire to death these fish accustomed to elegantly "floating". They also need dense floating plants to feel protected from above.

- Estremamente pacifico, timido e di movenze lente. È il 'gigante gentile' dei labirintidi asiatici. I maschi possono avere blande scaramucce gerarchiche tra loro, ma raramente sfociano in danni fisici reali. Fuggono da pesci iperattivi o aggressivi.

- Onnivoro / Insettivoro. Bocca rivolta verso l'alto per l'alimentazione superficiale. Accettano facilmente scaglie e micro-pellet galleggianti di qualità. L'integrazione regolare con daphnia viva o congelata, chironomus e larve di zanzara è essenziale per indurre la brillante colorazione rossa del petto maschile.

- Harem (1 maschio, 2-3 femmine) o piccolo gruppo in vasche grandi (150cm+). Il maschio è distinguibile per la grande macchia rosso/arancio sulla gola e sul petto, la pinna dorsale appuntita e frastagliata e la pinna anale molto estesa. Le femmine sono rotonde, prive del rosso acceso, con pinne corte e arrotondate.

A differenza di altri Gurami o Betta, il maschio del Gurami Perlato è spesso molto meno brutale con la femmina dopo l'accoppiamento, sebbene sia saggio rimuoverla comunque.
- Compatibility
- Pessima scelta per vasche con Ciclidi aggressivi (anche nani) o pesci 'mordi-pinne' (Tiger Barb) che amputerebbero i loro tentacoli pelvici o le loro pinne. Perfetti con grandi branchi di Rasbore (Trigonostigma, Boraras), piccoli Cobitidi (Pangio), Corydoras pacifici e Loricaridi.
