Description

Geographic Origin and Biotope: Endemic to inland freshwater rivers of Myanmar. Unlike the common T. jaculatrix (estuarine, brackish), T. blythii lives exclusively in pure continental fresh water with overhanging vegetation.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Toxotidae (15-20 cm). Same amazing mouth structure allowing it to spit jets of water to knock prey off branches, instinctively correcting for visual refraction.

Social Behavior: Peaceful to appropriately sized tankmates, but highly hierarchical with conspecifics. Dominants claim the best 'shooting spots' under branches.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Spectacular clouded pattern: dark gold/mustard base covered in irregular black blotches and streaks, totally different from the banded estuarine archers. No visible dimorphism.

Care and observations

Tank Setup: 250+ liters. Lower water level by 20-30 cm to provide a massive air space. Hang roots or branches above the surface as target spots for insects. Secure lid. Excellent filtration.

Feeding: Surface insectivore. The joy of keeping this fish is placing live crickets or flies on the overhanging branches and watching them shoot them down. Will also accept frozen bloodworms and shrimp from the surface.

Water Quality: PURE FRESHWATER. Do not add salt. pH 6.5-7.5, GH 5-15, 24-28°C. Intolerant of high nitrates.

Compatibility: Great community fish for large setups (large Barbs, Catfish, Loaches). Will eat anything small enough to fit in its surprisingly large mouth.

Reproduction: Unknown in captivity. Rare and expensive import.

Risks: A sterile environment without air space or live insects leads to lethargy and atrophy of the spitting behavior. Very susceptible to eye infections if water quality drops.
