The Mbu Puffer (*Tetraodon mbu*) is the absolute and undisputed colossus of freshwater puffer fish. Reaching the incredible size of 60-70 cm (24-28 inches), this authentic "water dog" sports a massive and pear-shaped body, painted with a spectacular and intricate labyrinth of bright yellow lines on a black or olive green background. Famous for its unusual intelligence, it is able to recognize the faces of its owners and interact with them begging for food like a pet. Despite its adorable and expressive face, it possesses a powerful bony "beak" capable of cleanly slicing oyster shells and, potentially, human fingers. It requires mammoth aquariums and a financial and ethical dedication that only a professional aquarist can provide.

Description

The Water Dog:

It is considered the most empathetic and intelligent puffer fish in the world. It quickly learns who is the person who feeds it, ignoring strangers. When the owner enters the room, the Mbu will frantically swim up and down against the glass spitting water out to get noticed and beg for crustaceans, showing a personality worthy of a mammal.

Care and observations

Death by Long Teeth (Food with Shell):

The most important warning ever: its four huge plate-like teeth grow without ever stopping, like those of hamsters. In nature, the fish wears them down by crushing river mussels and snails. If you feed it soft fish (shelled shrimp, fillets, soft food), its teeth will grow frightfully until they form a padlock that will no longer allow it to open its mouth and the fish will starve to death. You are obliged to feed it closed mollusks, snails with live shells, whole crabs and oysters.

Do Not Buy the "Little Bean":

They are often sold in specialized shops when they are only 5 centimeters (2 inches) large, looking very tender and suitable for medium tanks. HUGE MISTAKE. This fish grows explosively; in a couple of years it will literally become as big and wide as a rugby ball (60 cm / 24 inches). It requires for itself alone an aquarium that looks like a bathtub, almost three meters (10 feet) long. Do not believe the lie that "it grows according to the aquarium".

Watch Your Hands:

It is a very sociable and curious animal, which will try to interact with your fingers on the glass. But when you do maintenance by putting your arms in the water, be extremely careful not to be mistaken for food. Its bony beak has evolved to cleanly slice coconuts and the thickest shells: if it bites a finger, the force of the bite will fracture your phalanges, amputating them cleanly.

Temperament: Estremamente intelligente, interattivo ma letalmente predatore verso quasi tutto ciò che si muove. Non è malvagio, semplicemente vede gli altri coinquilini come crostacei o molluschi da sgusciare.
Diet: Carnivoro / Durofago (Mangiatore di gusci). REQUISITO SALVAVITA: I loro denti fusi a becco crescono ininterrottamente per tutta la vita. Se non ricevono quotidianamente cibo con guscio duro (lumache giganti, granchi interi, cozze col guscio, vongole, chele di granchio, gamberoni non sgusciati), il becco crescerà fino a sigillargli la bocca, facendolo morire di inedia. A quel punto serve l'intervento del veterinario per limargli i denti con un Dremel sotto anestesia.

Sex ratio: Rigorosamente Singolo. Tenere due Mbu adulti insieme è un disastro garantito, si sbranerebbero a morsi asportandosi pezzi di carne grandi come un pugno. Impossibile sessarli da vivi.
Feeding frequency: 1 volta al giorno (esemplari giovani). 2-3 volte a settimana per gli adulti XXL, per non sovraccaricare la digestione e il filtro.
Bioload: Estremo (Uno dei massimi carichi organici possibili in acqua dolce)
Flow: Corrente da Moderata a Forte. Filtrazione ultra-sovradimensionata necessaria.
Reproduction: Impossibile e inesistente in cattività. Tutti gli esemplari, anche i piccolissimi "fagioli" venduti nei negozi specializzati, sono sistematicamente catturati nei fiumi africani (Wild Caught).
Compatibility: NON HA COMPAGNI. È un 'Wet Pet', va tenuto ASSOLUTAMENTE DA SOLO in vasca. Divorerà qualsiasi lumaca, crostaceo o gambero istantaneamente. Triturerà qualsiasi pesce di fondo. L'unico - e comunque rischioso - abbinamento talvolta testato in vasche pubbliche è con piccolissimi e veloci pesci di banco (es. grandi sciami di Tetra) che il palla ignora perché troppo piccoli e veloci per sprecare energie, ma le perdite notturne sono comunque preventivabili.
