Sturisoma aureum

The Royal Whiptail or Golden Sturisoma (*Sturisoma aureum*) is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular, alien and elegant sucker fish available in fishkeeping. Reaching a majestic 20-25 cm (8-10 inches), its body is a marvel of aerodynamics: wide and flat in the front, it tapers into a tail as thin as a riding crop (whiptail), ending with two exaggeratedly long caudal filaments. But the real attraction are the pectoral and dorsal fins: very tall, curved and sickle-shaped (or boomerang), which give the fish the appearance of a starfighter at rest. Colored gold and brown, it is a sculptural pacifist destined for large Amazonian aquariums.

Description

Waterfall Lovers:

These animals come from high-gradient rivers with rapid turbulent flows, and in order not to be washed away they evolved their "alien flounder" shape. In the aquarium you will find them constantly glued vertically to the glass right next to the filter pump outlet, where the water hits hardest and there is a massive supply of oxygen.

Care and observations

They Are Not Vegetarians (They Need Meat):

The fatal dietary mistake many make is treating them exactly like normal Ancistrus, throwing only zucchini or algae wafers in the aquarium. Although they graze on tender algae from the glass, the Sturisoma is actually an omnivore that requires a massive intake of protein not to get sick. Feed weekly frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp and bottom tablets with a very high fish content to make them live for decades.

The Fragility of the "Whiptail" (Avoid Small Tanks):

An 80 or 100 cm (3-foot) aquarium is not good for them, despite what the shopkeeper says. In addition to the massive body, they possess very long thread-like extensions on all fins and on the tail. In small aquariums, these clumsy fish turning around will constantly hit glass and stones, permanently breaking and mutilating these delicate and beautiful extensions. They need huge and uncluttered aquariums (120-150 cm / 4-5 feet).

The Beard Grows on Males:

Recognizing an adult pair of Sturisoma is the easiest activity in the world. When they become sexually mature, thick and bristly bushes of black spiny hairs (called odontodes) grow on both sides of the male's long and flat snout. He will look in all respects like an elderly gentleman with a long, thick beard on the sides of his cheeks.

Temperament: Estremamente placido, timido e letargico. Spende quasi tutta la giornata aggrappato immobile ai vetri posteriori o sotto i legni in una posa scultorea da 'aereo bombardiere', muovendosi in brevi, rapidi scatti per spostarsi tra i siti di foraggiamento.
Diet: Onnivoro / Raschiatore di Aufwuchs. Benché siano grandi consumatori di biofilm e alghe tenere sui legni, NON sono erbivori stretti come gli Ancistrus. Necessitano disperatamente di un forte apporto proteico: chironomus surgelato, artemia e ottime compresse carnivore da fondo. Se denutriti a sole alghe e verdure deperiscono gradualmente.

Sex ratio: Singolo, Coppia o Piccolo gruppo. Abbastanza insofferenti e moderatamente territoriali tra maschi se in spazi ristretti. Riconoscere i sessi è facilissimo negli adulti: le guance del maschio maturo si ricoprono di una folta e setolosa "barba" pungente (odontodi nuziali) mentre la femmina resta con il muso liscio.
Feeding frequency: 1-2 volte al giorno, preferibilmente durante le ore notturne per evitare i predatori di cibo voraci.
Bioload: Medio-Basso
Flow: Corrente Forte. Reofili eccezionali. Amano stazionare nei punti di massima turbolenza e altissima ossigenazione (come l'uscita del filtro o vicino alle pompe di movimento).
Reproduction: Dispersori su substrato aperto. Il corteggiamento è meraviglioso e meticoloso. La femmina deporrà grandi grappoli di uova ambrate direttamente sul vetro in un punto di forte corrente. Il maschio si appollaierà letteralmente sopra di esse, sventagliandole costantemente e proteggendole a costo della vita fino alla schiusa (7-10 giorni).
Compatibility: Pessima convivenza con Ciclidi aggressivi o spigolosi e Barbi mangiatori di pinne (distruggeranno i loro stupendi e delicati filamenti in poche ore). Compagni ideali sono Apistogramma, grossi branchi di Tetra pacifici, Corydoras e Loricaridi gentili.
