Banded Corydoras

Scleromystax barbatus

Scleromystax barbatus (formerly known as Corydoras barbatus) is the undisputed giant of aquarium callichthyids, reaching an impressive length of 10 centimeters (4 inches). It sports an extraordinary striped and marbled livery, but it is the morphology of the male that takes your breath away: an extremely elongated snout and cheeks covered with actual bristles resembling a thick beard, from which it takes its name. Splendid but demanding, it is a fish of fast, very cool waters (sub-tropical), totally incompatible with the standards of classic heated tropical aquariums.

Description

Origin and Behavior:

It originates exclusively from the mountain coastal rivers that flow into the Atlantic in southern Brazil, areas with temperate climates where water flows rapidly over pebbles. It is unique in its kind because adult males are fiercely territorial towards other conspecifics (an unheard-of situation in common Corydoras), engaging in side-by-side combat, which is why ample space and rocky hiding places must be provided.

Sexual Dimorphism and Morphology:

The "beard" (formed by fleshy and thickened odontodes on the cheeks) and the extreme elongation of the head belong only to dominant males, which also sport a dark black color with bright gold/silver veining, while females, although large, maintain a stockier snout, absence of a beard, and a duller brown spotted livery.

Care and observations

Tank Setup:

An aquarium 100-120 cm (4 feet) long is a must to accommodate their impressive size and the males' territories. A 'hillstream' setup is ideal: very soft river sand mixed with smooth pebbles and flat river stones, creating strong zones of turbulence. A powerful additional flow pump (powerhead) will keep the fish healthy and active by simulating the torrent. Smooth wood will offer shelter.

Diet:

They are huge eaters and waste away quickly in tanks with strong currents if underfed. They will eagerly devour chopped earthworms, adult brine shrimp, massive quantities of bloodworms, and large sinking carnivore tablets.

Water Quality:

The water *must* remain cool (16-22°C / 60-72°F). During the summer, if the temperature in the house exceeds 26°C (79°F) for many consecutive days, the fish can suffer from systemic necrosis and fatal stress; the use of cooling fans or a chiller is highly recommended for warm climates.

Fish profile

Temperament
Pacifico verso le altre specie, ma con forte aggressività intraspecifica tra i maschi, cosa unica tra i Corydoras. I maschi adulti difendono piccoli territori.
Diet
Onnivoro carnivoro. Vorace predatore bentonico. Necessita di grandi quantità di pastiglie proteiche, chironomus, krill e lombrichi tagliati a pezzi.

Sex ratio
A causa dell'aggressività territoriale dei maschi, è essenziale mantenere 1 maschio ogni 2-3 femmine se la vasca è inferiore a 150 cm di lunghezza.
Feeding frequency
1-2 volte al giorno in modo molto abbondante. Il tasso metabolico in corrente è altissimo.
Bioload
Alto (mangiano e producono molti rifiuti)
Flow
Corrente Molto Forte
Jump risk
Covered tank required
Reproduction
