Denison Barb (Torpedo Barb)
Sahyadria denisonii
The Denison Barb (*Sahyadria denisonii*), commercially known as 'Torpedo Barb' or 'Miss Kerala', shocked global fishkeeping upon its debut in the 1990s. Its hydrodynamic torpedo body is wrapped in a marked black line crossing it horizontally, surmounted by a dazzling fire-red stripe on the anterior half. The dorsal fin stands out edged in red, and the tail sports unmistakable yellow and black bands. Beyond its iconic appearance, its perpetual and extremely lively schooling swimming makes it one of the most striking inhabitants for large tanks.

Description
A Lethal Popularity:
The species is the perfect example of the devastation caused by popularity. Becoming the "fish of the year" in the late 90s, indiscriminate collection for fishkeeping (combined with pollution from Indian cardamom plantations) brought the wild species to a total population collapse in a few years. India had to ban its export. Today, fortunately, 100% of the specimens in stores come from huge Asian commercial farms using hormonal reproduction.
Color Curiosity:
During the night, Denison Barbs completely lose the brilliance of their colors, showing a dull grey mottled livery. If you suddenly turn on the aquarium light in the morning, do not be alarmed: they will return to their red-black splendor within ten minutes.
Care and observations
Hillstream Setup:
Their classification as mountain river fish means they demand specific parameters. In nature, they do not live in still ponds. The aquarium must replicate a stream: use river sand mixed with rounded pebbles, some mangrove branches, and install oversized filters or wave makers to create a laminar flow (from one side of the tank to the other) that forces the fish to swim. The water must be exceptionally clear and saturated with oxygen (air pumps highly recommended).
The Temperature Drama:
Keeping a Denison Barb in a classic Amazonian aquarium at 28-30°C (82-86°F) is a slow death sentence. High temperatures drastically lower the amount of dissolved oxygen their swimming gills require. The temperature should never exceed 25°C (77°F) and should be lowered to 20-22°C (68-72°F) in winter to mimic seasonality.
Deceiving Dimensions:
The magnificent colored groups of 4 cm (1.5 inches) sold in stores become 15 cm (6-inch) hyper-active rockets. Confining a school of such large open-swimming fish in tanks less than a meter (3 feet) long causes muscle wasting and vertebral deformities. A linear 250 liters (65 gallons, at least 4 feet long) is needed.
Fish profile
- Temperament
- Estremamente pacifico, gregario e attivo.

- Sex ratio
- Gruppi misti in banchi (Shoaling fish). Acquistare sempre gruppi pari o superiori a 6 individui, altrimenti diventano timorosi e sbiaditi.
- Feeding frequency
- Jump risk
- Covered tank required
- Reproduction
- Difficile in acquario privato.
