Description

Geographic Origin and Biotope: Endemic to fast-flowing mountain streams of SE China and Northern Vietnam. Cold, crystal-clear, highly oxygenated rushing water over smooth boulders. Important: this is a pure freshwater goby, unlike many estuarine Gobiidae.

Taxonomy and Morphology: True goby (Oxudercidae), 4-5 cm. Pelvic fins fused into a suction cup disc, allowing it to anchor securely to smooth rocks in rapids. Stocky body, large head, prominent eyes.

Social Behavior: Extremely territorial and bold. Males defend micro-territories (often a single flat stone), engaging in spectacular threat displays: gaping dark mouths, erecting fins, flashing bright colors. Moves in short hops from stone to stone rather than swimming freely.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Males much more colorful: reddish-brown with dark veins, first dorsal fin edged in bright red with 1-2 black spots ('duospilus'), and cheeks with red lines that flash brilliant white during displays. Females are smaller, drabber, and rounder.

Care and observations

Tank Setup: Hillstream/river manifold setup (60+ liters). Powerful current over river gravel and various sized round cobblestones. Robust plants attached to rocks (Anubias, ferns). Visual barriers between stones are essential to break lines of sight.

Feeding: Strictly carnivorous micro-predator. Consistently refuses dry flakes. Requires sinking live/frozen foods: bloodworms, daphnia, brine shrimp. Feed in flow-break areas so food doesn't blow away before it can grab it.

Water Quality: KEY PARAMETER: cool temperatures (15-24°C). In 26-28°C tropical tanks, their metabolism crashes and they die prematurely. pH 7.0-8.0. Massive oxygenation, zero tolerance for ammonia/nitrite. Water must be fast and crystal clear.

Compatibility: Excellent with other cool-water rheophilic fish: White Cloud Minnows, Danios, Hillstream Loaches. Males are aggressive to each other; provide at least 30x30 cm footprint per male with pebble visual barriers.

Reproduction: Male excavates a burrow under a flat stone. Eggs glued to the cave ceiling. Male evicts female and fiercely guards/fans the eggs for 12-15 days. Fry hatch as benthic miniatures, needing brine shrimp nauplii.

Risks: Excessive heat and hypoxia are rapidly fatal. Starvation from faster tankmates stealing food. Poor tolerance to chemical medications due to scaleless mucosal skin.
