Rosy Barb

Puntius conchonius

The Relentless Pink Giant (4-5.5 inches / 10-14 cm). The Rosy Barb is one of the largest, hardiest, and most active Barbs in the hobby. Sold at a cute 1 inch, they rapidly balloon into massive, deep-bodied metallic pink/red powerhouses with black-tipped fins. They are utterly tireless, hyper-active swimmers that demand extremely long tanks. They are famous for two things: happily surviving in unheated, cool water, and completely annihilating any delicate live plants in your tank.

Care and observations

Tank Setup and The Cold Water Secret:

The Cool-Water Swimmer. Hailing from the foothills of the Himalayas in India, they actually despise hot, 82°F (28°C) tropical tanks. They thrive in unheated, subtropical setups naturally hovering between 64°F and 74°F (18°C - 23°C). Because they grow to a massive 5.5 inches and swim like torpedoes, keeping them in anything less than a 4-foot (120 cm) long aquarium is cruel and will cause frantic pacing.

Feeding and Plant Destruction:

The Plant Shredder. They are ravenous omnivores with a massive appetite for green matter. If you do not heavily feed them blanched zucchini, peas, or spirulina wafers, they will turn to your aquascape and literally mow down, chew up, and swallow all your expensive stem plants. The silver lining is that they are one of the very few fish in the world that will actively eat tough Black Beard Algae (BBA) and Hair Algae out of sheer gluttony.

Compatibility (The Hyperactive Danger):

While they are not strictly 'Fin-Nippers' like Tiger Barbs, their sheer massive size, lightning-fast speed, and frantic energy will completely terrify slow-moving, peaceful fish like Angelfish, Discus, or Gouramis. They must be kept in large schools (8+) with equally massive, fast, robust fish (like Giant Danios or large Loaches) to prevent them from bullying the tank through sheer hyperactivity.
