The *Pundamilia nyererei* is one of the most threatened and chromatically shocking treasures of Lake Victoria (a lake that has seen the extinction of hundreds of cichlid species due to the introduction of the Nile Perch). It is the 'parrot' of African cichlids: dominant adult males sport a literally fiery livery, with a raven black belly, crimson red or bright neon orange flanks and back, split by fierce vertical black bands and a yellow/green head. Unlike the Mbuna of Malawi, it has a less stocky and more tapered shape. But this explosion of colors comes at a price: it is one of the most madly hyperactive, aggressive and destructive cichlids towards its peers that can be kept, requiring manic management of the layout and the Harem.

Description

The Dancing Macho and the Exhausted Harem:

The amount of testosterone in a healthy male is impressive. One or two grey females are not enough for him, he would exhaust them by forcing them to mate until they have a heart attack. It is mandatory to buy for him AT LEAST 5 or 6 females. When the male is hyped up (practically always), his colors will become phosphorescent, he will form a 'T' in front of the head of the chosen female and will start shaking violently from head to tail like an epileptic to excite her.

Care and observations

A Lake on the Brink of Extinction (Absolute Ban on Hybridization):

Attention. Lake Victoria cichlids are endangered due to pollution and human-introduced apex predators. They are very rare in the trade. If you find them, you have the ethical obligation to NEVER mix this fish with ANY other Victoria cichlid. They would immediately mate across different species, creating unacceptable mongrel mutants (hybrids), dirtying and destroying the last pure bloodlines left in the hobby. They must be kept in tanks ONLY for themselves, without cousins.

The Visual Trench Trick:

Unlike their Malawi cousins who defend their cave while stationary, the Nyererei male is a patroller. He darts left and right obsessively checking the entire tank. If from the right he can SEE the other side of the tank and spots another male, he will go straight like a missile to kill him. You are obliged to raise a very high physical wall in the center of the aquarium up to the surface of the water (made of opaque rocks, dense fake plants or roots) to split the tank into two blind halves.

They are Not Malawi Vegetarians:

Do not give them only Spirulina algae as you do with Mbunas, otherwise their fiery red and yellow colors will become a pathetic faded pink. In Lake Victoria they hunt insects. They must be largely fed with carnivorous foods for Discus and Cichlids (Artemia, ground Krill, frozen bloodworms).

Temperament: Pugnace, frenetico e spietatamente intra-specifico. Il maschio è un concentrato di iperattività e territorialità esplosiva. Se nutriti solo a scaglie, i rossi e i gialli sbiadiranno in un rosa spento.

Sex ratio: Harem Gigante Tassativo (1 maschio e MINIMO 4-6 femmine). Tenere una coppia significa condannare la femmina a morte certa per pestaggio da accoppiamento. Due maschi si tollerano solo in vasche chilometriche (oltre i 600 litri). Le femmine sono anonime, di un colore grigio-oliva smorto, ma sono essenziali per il benessere psicologico (e cromatico) del maschio.
Feeding frequency: 1-2 volte al giorno. Sono mangiatori di superficie e di mezz'acqua, frenetici e aggressivi sul pasto.
Bioload: Medio-Alto
Flow: Corrente da Moderata a Lieve. Non amano il moto ondoso forte del Malawi, preferendo acque stabili tipiche delle sponde del Lago Vittoria.

Reproduction: Incubatori orali materni. I maschi del Vittoria sono maestri del corteggiamento violento: si parano a T davanti alla femmina, scuotendosi convulsamente. È TASSATIVO non incrociare mai varianti geografiche (es. Makobe Island con Ruti Island) né tantomeno specie diverse del Vittoria, pena un inquinamento genetico (ibridazione) irreversibile in un lago che ha già perso troppa biodiversità.
Compatibility: Ibridazione Altamente Pericolosa. Se si tiene un Nyererei, NON si devono ASSOLUTAMENTE inserire altre specie del Lago Vittoria (Haplochromis) o l'incrocio letale è matematico. Sebbene possano convivere con Mbuna del Malawi pacifici o di taglia media, l'ideale è una vasca monospecifica (Species Tank) dedicata solo a loro per goderne l'etologia in purezza.
