The *Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps*, magnificently known as the "Leopard Pleco" or "Sailfin Pleco", is the luxury version of the common Plecostomus. It is just as gigantic (reaches and often exceeds 45 cm / 18 inches in length) and just as polluting, but decidedly more spectacular from an aesthetic point of view. Its armored body is entirely covered by a very clear and beautiful honeycomb or leopard spot network (dark brown on a golden/sand background). But the distinctive element that takes your breath away is the immense dorsal fin: very high, composed of 12-14 rays (against the 7-8 of the common pleco), which when deployed in an attitude of threat or curiosity perfectly recalls the imposing sail of an ancient galleon, making it a true submarine dragon.

Description

Aggressive Devourer of Boiled Zucchini:

Forget making it clean the tank. The huge adult beast wants a gourmet meal effortlessly. Sink a large raw green zucchini cut in half using a stone to hold it down for the very heavy dark night before going to sleep. This inept Algae Eater will come out furious in the dark sniffing frantically and will eagerly and with immense fury suck up devouring cleanly in a few night hours leaving you in the morning only the very fine but emptied trace of useless external floating peel.

Care and observations

A Miniature Dinosaur (Size is Deceiving):

Just like its less showy cousin, the Sailfin Pleco is sold very small and full of adorable golden leopard spots. It is the favorite choice of children in stores. Too bad it will grow at a furious pace: it will easily exceed 16 or 18 inches (the length of a human arm up to the elbow). Buying it to stuff it in a 30-gallon tank is cruelty and a death sentence. This polka dot dragon STRICTLY requires a majestic living room tank almost 6 feet long.

The Termite of the Aquarium (Wood is Life):

It doesn't just eat algae. And it doesn't just live on feed. This animal has a digestive system designed to dispose of wood. You are obliged to insert massive and expensive natural river trunks (Manila Wood, Bogwood) otherwise it will get sick with intestinal occlusion. They will spend all holy day clinging with their belly to the root to finely rasp and devour the cellulose consuming and piercing over the years even the toughest woods. Get ready to see the aquarium water perpetually opaque or full of fine brown particles of fecal sawdust: your filter will have to work three times as hard to stem this organic landfill of sawdust.

The Dance of the Great Sail (Brawl Danger):

The immense and majestic spiny dorsal fin is raised by the "Gibbiceps" like a hoisted flag. But it's not to say hello. It is a gesture of war and territorial supremacy. If another Plecostomus or large bottom fish enters its dark wooden lair, the Gibbiceps will raise the gigantic and scary sail to intimidate the enemy appearing twice as big. If the challenger does not run away instantly and cowardly, it will attack violently sideways dealing whiplashes with the fin and slamming its spiked armor in its face. One per aquarium is the unquestionable golden rule.

Fish profile

Temperament: Tendenzialmente Pacifico ma Intollerante con Altri Loricaridi. Si mostra indifferente al nuoto dei pesci superiori. Tuttavia, essendo stanziale su una tana di legno, diventerà un carro armato furioso se un altro Pleco o un Synodontis tenta di usurpare la sua radice preferita, usando il muso piatto come ariete.
Diet: Erbivoro / Detritivoro Specializzato (Xilofago Parziale). Legno, legno e verdure. Sebbene onnivoro da adulto, il 70% della dieta deve essere vegetale. Zucchine, cetrioli (ancorati al fondo perché galleggiano) e pastiglie di alghe affondanti in quantità industriale. Non nutrirli adeguatamente li spingerà a sfondare le foglie di Vallisneria ed Echinodorus (piante che normalmente tollerano se saziati).

Sex ratio: Esemplare Solitario Singolo (Monster Community). Assolutamente da non tenere in due nella stessa vasca se non possedete laghetti artificiali oltre i 1000 litri, o le lotte territoriali notturne porteranno al ferimento grave del sottomesso. Nessun dimorfismo visibile evidente.
Feeding frequency: 1 volta al giorno (Sera/Spegnimento luci) fornendo enormi tocchi di vegetali o numerose maxipastiglie da fondo specifiche per L-Numbers (Loricaridi).
Bioload: Estremo. Forse sporca persino di più del Plecostomus a causa della sua voracità per il legno. L'acqua si riempirà spesso di polvere marroncina di cellulosa digerita, obbligando a pulizie frequentissime delle spugne del filtro.
Flow: Corrente da Moderata a Lenta. Al contrario dei Plecostomus fluviali, il Gibbiceps popola spesso zone di palude stagnante in Amazzonia (spesso avvistato ad ingurgitare aria in superficie se l'ossigeno scarseggia grazie al suo intestino modificato).

Reproduction: Covatori di Buca Profonda Fangosa (Impossibile in Acquario). Costruiscono nidi sottomarini massicci nelle rive di argilla. In cattività non si riproducono in acquario di vetro; la totalità degli esemplari in commercio proviene da giganteschi laghetti di fango negli allevamenti asiatici.
Compatibility: Mantenimento Ottimo in Grandi Comunità Sudamericane e Vasche Monster. L'alternativa 'deluxe' al pleco per vasche grandi: eccezionale sotto l'ombra con immensi banchi di Tetra o a fianco di severi Oscar e Ciclidi Mida. Persiste lo stesso avvertimento: non mischiare con pesci alti, piatti e dalla superficie cutanea vasta (Discus/Scalari) per evitare predazioni notturne al loro muco protettivo.
