Description

Geographic Origin and Biotope: Strictly confined to highly acidic, slow-moving blackwater forest streams (Igarapés) of the Upper Rio Negro and Orinoco basins, deeply shaded by the rainforest canopy and loaded with decaying leaf litter.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Crenuchidae (up to 3 cm). Looks and acts more like a tiny benthic killifish or darter than a typical tetra. Cylindrical, stocky body with a surprisingly large mouth.

Social Behavior: Highly cryptic. Lives entirely hidden in the leaf litter. Males are micro-territorial, defending tiny patches around a rolled leaf or wood crevice. Displays between males are spectacular, flaring their huge fins. Peaceful toward other species.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Rivals the rarest dwarf cichlids. Males are deep ruby/red-brown. The enormous sail-like dorsal and anal fins are pitch black, streaked with iridescent blue/green horizontal lines and bordered in blinding white. Females are drab beige with two dark lateral stripes and short fins.

Care and observations

Tank Setup: A small group can live in 40-50 liters, BUT conditions must be pristine specialized Blackwater. Dim lighting, very slow sponge filtration (they hate flow). The floor MUST be heavily covered in dried Ketapang/Oak leaves, twigs, and botanicals. The water should be stained the color of dark tea.

Feeding: Micro-carnivore. Extremely stubborn eater initially; will usually refuse flakes or pellets. MUST be fed tiny live or frozen foods that reach the bottom: live baby brine shrimp (essential for acclimatization), microworms, grindal worms, and daphnia.

Water Quality: THE REAL HURDLE. Cannot survive in standard community tanks. Requires extreme acidity: pH 3.5 - 5.5 (struggles above 6.0). KH and GH must be nearly undetectable (100% RO water with peat/botanicals). Zero tolerance for ammonia/nitrites. 24-28°C.

Compatibility: Best kept in a strictly species-only tank. Can tolerate tiny upper-level dither fish like Nannostomus (Pencilfish) or Cardinal Tetras. Will be severely stressed and outcompeted for food by Corydoras or Apistogrammas.

Reproduction: Like the Sailfin Tetra, the male provides exclusive parental care. He guards eggs laid on the ceiling of a rolled leaf or tiny wood crevice. pH must be ~4.0 to prevent eggs from fungusing.

Risks: 1. Rapid death in neutral/alkaline water (pH 6.5+) due to bacterial infections. 2. Starvation if dry food is offered instead of live microworms/brine shrimp.
