Moscow Blue Guppy

Poecilia reticulata var. Moscow Blue

The Moscow Blue is the aristocracy of Guppies. Males are dressed in a velvety cobalt blue from head to tail, without any spots. Unfortunately, decades of inbreeding to fix this perfect color have made them genetically deformed. As they grow, their fragile spine collapses under the titanic weight of their tail. In addition, females are true reproductive machines: capable of storing sperm from a single mating for months, they will give birth to 40-50 fry every month, sparking a population explosion that will devastate your aquarium.

Description

The Broken Spine (The Weight of Genius Futile Deaf Mute):

Hyper-selection has weakened the bone architecture of the Moscow Blue. If you do not provide a diet very rich in calcium, their spine will curve horribly (irreversible Scoliosis) as the tail grows. A deformed male will no longer be able to swim and will end up on the bottom waiting for death.

Care and observations

The Demographic Time Bomb (The Invasion Futile Blind):

Underestimating Guppy reproduction is the leading cause of abandoning the hobby. A 40-liter tank will become, in just three months, a nursery teeming with 200 fry. Filters will collapse, ammonia will spike, and the fish will die of mass asphyxiation. If you don't have friends to give dozens of fish to, or a natural predator in the tank (for birth control), keep ONLY MALES.
