Striped Raphael Catfish (Talking Catfish)

Platydoras armatulus

The Striped Raphael or Talking Catfish (*Platydoras armatulus*) is a true armored 'tank' of the Amazon basin, often mistakenly sold in the trade as its congener *P. costatus*. Growing to impressive proportions (20-25 cm / 8-10 inches) and of remarkable longevity (it can easily exceed 15 years), it sports a wide and very robust cylindrical body with a spectacular striped milk-white/cream livery on a pitch-black or very dark brown background. It is renowned as 'Talking' for its extraordinary ability to emit loud and funny grunts or groans audible both in the water (by stridulating the pectoral bone) and when taken out of the water in case of moving. Armored with hooked bony shields along the entire flank, it is one of the most indestructible catfish around.

Description

The Grunt of the Aquatic Piglet:

If you are forced to take it out of the water with a bucket in case of moving or illness, or if it is threatened by another fish at night, it will surprise you. By contracting a muscle on the spine it will make the rib cage vibrate like the soundboard of a cello, emitting noises that sound like the unmistakable grunts of an annoyed mini pig.

Care and observations

You Will Never See It Again (Until Late at Night):

The main warning for those who spend money to buy this magnificent zebra fish: it is hyper-lucifugous (it hates light and is purely nocturnal). If you throw it in a normal aquarium during the day, it will instantly crawl under the most inaccessible root, or even half-bury itself in the sand wedging itself to death in a crack and will remain literally motionless for months. Do not force it out. Put the food in only in total darkness and equip yourself with a red-light flashlight if you want to spy on it patrolling the bottom at night.

A Stuck and Spiky Tractor (Never with nets):

The entire lateral white line you see on the fish is not color, it is an armored column of bony plates equipped with hook-bent rostra. It is an impenetrable medieval armor. If you try to catch it with a net, the hooks will become permanently stuck, making it impossible to get it out without killing it with scissors. Use exclusively large rigid plastic bowls. Furthermore, if it voluntarily wedges itself in a hole in a log or a crevice to sleep, it is useless to try to pull it out (it turns to stone to defend itself from predators).

Slow Eaters and Fattening:

Once it reaches XXL size (a 20-centimeter / 8-inch sausage), it becomes very slow and lazy. If the tank mates quickly eat the nocturnal pellets before they reach the bottom, the Raphael will starve.

Fish profile

Temperament
Pietra tombale.
Diet
Onnivoro. La bocca funge da ruspa notturna. Devorano fiumi di tablet affondanti (spirulina, pellet carnivori giganti, gamberetti morti interamente congelati, piselli sbollentati). Tendono drammaticamente all'obesità in vasche chiuse in cui fanno poco movimento.

Sex ratio
Singolo (Wet Pet notturno) o Gruppo in vasche gigantesche. Impossibile sessarli da vivi senza endoscopie; femmine adulte sembrano solo più grasse.
Feeding frequency
1 volta al giorno, tassativamente DOPO lo spegnimento delle luci. Altrimenti moriranno di inedia rintanati al buio.
Bioload
Alto (Enorme stazza e grande assunzione di cibo)
Flow
Corrente da Moderata a Lieve.
Reproduction
Rigorosamente inesistente negli acquari domestici.
