Description
Geographic Origin and Biotope: West African Atlantic coasts. Intertidal mudflats and mangrove estuaries. Climbs roots at high tide, patrols exposed mud at low tide.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Oxudercidae (Goby family), 15-20 cm. A masterpiece of amphibious adaptation. Periscope-like eyes see perfectly in the air. Breathes by holding water in enlarged gill chambers. Pectoral fins are jointed to act as walking legs.
Social Behavior: Highly territorial and active. Males defend mud territories with spectacular displays: raising on 'arms', gaping mouths, and flashing their sail-like dorsal fin. Spends 90% of its time OUT of the water. Skips across the water surface like a stone when scared.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Mud-gray body. Males have a stunning black dorsal fin edged with neon blue and white used for 'flagging'.
Care and observations
Tank Setup: FATAL ERROR: this is not an aquarium fish, it requires a PALUDARIUM. 70% land, 30% water. Water depth should be only 10-15 cm. Must provide vast muddy/sandy beaches to roll in and dig, plus climbing roots. AIR TEMP MUST BE WARM AND HUMID (26-30°C) via a tight glass lid. In a fully submerged tank, THEY WILL DROWN.
Feeding: Carnivore. Hunts exclusively on land. Will ignore food in the water. Feed live crickets, flies, and thawed bloodworms directly on the dry rocks or mud.
Water Quality: strictly BRACKISH WATER (SG 1.005 - 1.015 with marine salt). pH 7.5-8.5. Fatal fungus infections if kept in freshwater long-term.
Compatibility: Extreme setup makes tankmates difficult. Huge paludariums can house Archerfish in the deep section or Fiddler crabs. Males are hyper-aggressive to each other; provide at least 3 square feet of mud per male.
Reproduction: Impossible. They dig meter-deep U-shaped mud burrows with underground air chambers to spawn.
Risks: Drowning (no land access), pneumonia/drying out (cold, unsealed room air), and freshwater fungus. Starvation if food is dropped in the water.
