Description

Geographic Origin and Biotope: Endemic to northwestern Madagascar. It was believed completely extinct in the wild due to deforestation and invasive Tilapia, surviving only in dedicated hobbyist and public aquariums until recent reintroductions into private lakes. Originally inhabited shallow, warm, sandy floodplain lakes.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Madagascar Cichlid (25 cm). Very tall, discoid, and laterally compressed body shape, resembling a giant Discus. Jaw and dentition are heavily specialized for crushing hard snail shells (molluscivore).

Social Behavior: Far more peaceful than Central American cichlids of similar size. Schooling when young. Adults form strong pair bonds and become territorial to breed, but rarely murderous. Spends its entire day sifting sand and chewing on driftwood.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Platinum/blue-grey base covered in tight, vertical black pinstripes. The tail and anal fin are beautifully bordered by a bold, blood-red arch ('Mena' means red in Malagasy). No obvious dimorphism, though old males develop a steeper nuchal hump.

Care and observations

Tank Setup: Due to their 10-inch platter size, minimum tank is 500+ liters. SUBSTRATE IS CRITICAL: generous, deep, powder-fine sand. They plunge their snouts deep into the sand, sifting it through their gills. Rough gravel or sharp substrates will cause fatal mouth abrasions and intestinal blockages. Provide large, smooth driftwood logs for cover.

Feeding: Omnivore/Molluscivore. MUST have crunch in its diet: live snails, shell-on krill, or hard pellets to wear down teeth. Must be balanced with heavy greens (Spirulina, peas). Excess meaty foods (bloodworms, beefheart) will cause fatal Malawai-bloat-like symptoms.

Water Quality: THE MALAGASY SECRET: Heat. These fish require very warm water (26-29°C / 79-84°F, up to 30°C for breeding). At standard 24°C, their immune system crashes and they die of Ich. pH 7.0-8.0, moderate hardness. Massive filtration required due to sand sifting.

Compatibility: Best kept in a Madagascar biotope (with Paratilapia) or with large, peaceful armored catfish. Will instantly crush and eat all ornamental snails. Do not house with hyper-aggressive Central American cichlids (e.g., Midas, Red Devils) which will bully them to death.

Reproduction: Bi-parental substrate spawners. They meticulously clean a vertical rock/wood surface to lay eggs. The pair becomes incredibly aggressive, defending the fry against all tankmates.

Risks: 1. Conservation responsibility: these are critically endangered. 2. Lethal Ich outbreaks from cold water (under 26°C). 3. Hole-in-the-Head (HITH) disease from poor water hygiene and lack of dietary minerals.
