The African Butterfly Fish (*Pantodon buchholzi*) is a living fossil and one of the most extravagant freshwater 'Oddballs'. Its name derives from the massive and disproportionate transparent pectoral fins similar to wings which, seen from above, give it the features of a bat or a butterfly in flight. It has a head flat as a board, a huge mouth facing the sky, and long frayed pelvic fins that fall downwards like dead roots. Reaching 10-12 cm (4-5 inches), it is an exceptional specialized aerial predator: it spends its entire existence motionless in contact with the water surface waiting for an insect to land or fall on it, to then swallow it in a fraction of a second. It can make formidable leaps out of the water (gliding with its 'wings' for short distances) to escape predators or catch flies in flight.
