Kuhli Loach

Pangio kuhlii

The *Pangio kuhlii* (commonly called Kuhli Loach) is one of the most curious and eccentric bottom-dwelling fish in fishkeeping. Similar to a small eel or a colorful aquatic snake, it has an elongated and thread-like body (up to 10 cm / 4 inches) crossed by thick alternating black and orange-salmon bands. Although the serpentine appearance may intimidate beginners, the Kuhli is actually an extremely shy, totally harmless fish and an excellent nocturnal scavenger. It has the peculiarity of slipping into every imaginable crevice, disappearing for weeks only to suddenly reappear.

Description

Living Barometer:

They are famous among aquarists as "rain predictors". Being equipped with an internal organ extremely sensitive to drops in barometric pressure (Weberian apparatus), when a strong thunderstorm is about to arrive they often 'go crazy', starting to swim up and down the side glass at very high speed in what is called the 'Kuhli Loach dance'.

Care and observations

Golden Rule (Fine Sand):

The most dramatic mistake you can make is putting them in an aquarium with coarse gravel or sharp quartz. They have a very soft abdomen (lacking robust scales) and four pairs of tiny sensory barbels around the mouth. Their primary instinct when frightened is to dive headfirst into the bottom and bury themselves: if the bottom is sharp they will scratch themselves to death getting infected. Very fine river sand is mandatory to house them.

The Hidden School:

Even if they do not swim in unison like Neons, they are highly gregarious fish that rely on numbers to feel safe. Do not buy one or two. Buy 6, 8 or 10. If you buy a few, they will hole up for life. If they are a nice group, you will often see them resting all tangled together like a nest of snakes under a leaf or a tube, and they will be bolder, coming out even during the day to look for food.

Securing the Tank (Filter Warning):

They have the body of a thick spaghetti. They will find and slip into the slits of internal filters (only to die sucked in by the impeller) or in unthinkable holes of fake decorations. Always put a nylon stocking or a dense sponge on the water intake of your filter.

Fish profile

Temperament
Estremamente pacifico, timido e tendenzialmente notturno/crepuscolare.

Bioload
Basso
Flow
Corrente da Nulla a Debole (paludi a lento scorrimento)
Jump risk
Covered tank required
Reproduction
Rarissima e spesso accidentale in acquario.
