Clown Pleco (L104)
Panaqolus maccus
The Clown Pleco (*Panaqolus maccus* or L104) is one of the most adorable, widespread, and suitable Loricariids for home aquariums. Unlike the common "Common Pleco" (*Pterygoplichthys pardalis*) which turns into a half-meter monster, the Clown Pleco is a dwarf species that rarely exceeds 8 cm (3 inches). Famous for its beautiful pattern of irregular brown and orange rings, it hides a very particular dietary secret: it is an obligate xylophage, meaning it actively and insatiably feeds on the decaying wood present in the tank.

Description
Geographical Origin:
Originates from the Venezuelan river basins of the Orinoco and the Rio Apure. These are rivers rich in collapsed trees and branches fallen into the water due to seasonal flooding.
Morphology and Coloration:
Stocky, stubby body covered in spiny armor. The pattern is fascinating but highly changeable based on mood and sex: the base body goes from black to dark brown, transversely interrupted by irregular bands, stripes, and rings of a bright ochre, sand, or burnt orange color. The fins show these stripes forming beautiful arches. Dominant males are impressive: they develop long spiny "hairs" (odontodes) on the posterior body that resemble a prickly fur.
Care and observations
Tank Setup:
The first rule is not the water, it's the decor. The Clown Pleco cannot survive in an aquarium decorated with fake resin rocks, sunken plastic ships, or fake castles. It must have a castle of real wood. Soft bogwood, Cholla wood, or soaked mangrove roots are its 5-star restaurant. It will spend its days attached to the underside of these logs, scraping them to the bone with its specialized spatula-shaped teeth.
Diet:
Many people are surprised that this pleco hardly cleans green algae off the glass at all: simply put, it's not its diet. Wood makes up the bulk of the fiber requirement necessary for its intestinal digestion. Hard vegetable foods (which it enjoys rasping) must be supplemented weekly: slices of blanched zucchini, cucumber slices, or sinking tablets rich in *Spirulina* and cellulose. A diet too rich in meat proteins will rapidly lead to lethal intestinal blockages and bloat.
Water Quality:
It is highly adaptable to chemical conditions. It prefers a slightly acidic pH but tolerates dechlorinated tap water perfectly well (pH up to 7.5). The only factor to keep an eye on is the filter: by constantly gnawing wood, the Clown Pleco defecates unbelievable amounts of "aquarium sawdust". Mechanical pre-filters (sponges) will clog quickly and require washing much more frequently than normal.
Fish profile
- Temperament

- Feeding frequency
- Legno sempre a disposizione. Fornire verdure fresche ogni 2-3 giorni e rimuoverle dopo 24h.
- Bioload
- Medio (quantità enorme di detriti legnosi prodotti)
- Flow
- Corrente Moderata
- Reproduction
