Checker Barb

Oliotius oligolepis

An underrated barb with a discreet charm: scales with dark edges creating a checkerboard pattern, fins edged in black, and in adult males an orange-red reflection on the fins. Peaceful, not a fin-nipper, hardy — everything you want in a community fish. Reaches just 5 cm. One of the few barbs truly suitable for living with delicate fish.

Description

Geographical Origin & Biotope:

The Checker Barb (Oliotius oligolepis) is a highly attractive, astonishingly peaceful schooling cyprinid natively endemic to the massive river basins, highly vegetated swamp forests, and pristine blackwater lakes of Sumatra and Borneo in Indonesia. Their natural biotope is fundamentally defined by shallow, slow-moving or completely stagnant water that is heavily shaded by towering jungle canopies and deeply stained with tannins from massive accumulations of decaying tropical leaf litter and submerged wood.

Taxonomy & Morphology:

Scientifically classified within the Cyprinidae family, they are significantly smaller and vastly more peaceful than their infamous cousins (like the Tiger Barb). Fully mature adults reach a maximum of 4.5 to 5.0 centimeters (1.8-2.0 inches) in length. Morphologically, they possess a classic, slightly deep-bodied barb shape, built for maneuvering through dense vegetation rather than open-water sprinting. Their defining anatomical feature is their uniquely large, distinct scales that create a highly recognizable geometric pattern.

Social Behavior:

They are highly intelligent, incredibly gentle, and intensely social schooling fish. Unlike the aggressive fin-nipping behavior seen in larger barbs, the Checker Barb is universally celebrated for its absolute peacefulness. They patrol the middle and lower levels of the aquarium, constantly foraging and displaying to each other. They absolutely MUST be kept in a sizable school (minimum 6, ideally 8-12+). If kept in isolation, they will become intensely stressed, lose all their brilliant colors, and slowly waste away.

Coloration & Sexual Dimorphism:

Sexual dimorphism is absolute, stunning, and immediate. The Checker Barb is named for its body scales, which feature distinct dark borders against a pale gold or silvery-brown base, creating a beautiful "checkerboard" effect. Mature males are indisputable visual masterpieces; their bodies flush with a deep, intensely saturated brick-red or coppery-orange hue, and all their fins (dorsal, anal, pelvic) become starkly rimmed with brilliant, jet-black edging. Females remain paler, silvery-gold, with transparent or yellowish fins.

Care and observations

Tank Setup:

The aquarium architecture MUST flawlessly replicate their dark, slow-moving jungle origins to trigger the male's intense fiery colors. A minimum 60-liter (15-gallon) LONG tank is absolutely mandatory for a starting school. The tank MUST feature dense thickets of aquatic plants (like Cryptocoryne) and heavy, submerged driftwood to provide absolute security. Water flow MUST be gentle; strong currents will exhaust them. Dim lighting, achieved via floating plants (like Salvinia), and a dark substrate are unconditionally mandatory.

Diet & Feeding:

They are highly active, deliberate omnivores and opportunistic micro-predators. In the aquarium, they are completely unfussy, but their diet MUST be comprehensive and heavily protein-focused to maintain the male's stunning red and black coloration. They strictly MUST be fed a premium diet. Daily offerings of high-quality crushed flakes or micro-pellets, and specifically, large amounts of tiny live or frozen meaty foods (like bloodworms, cyclops, and daphnia) are unconditionally mandatory for optimal immune health and breeding.

Water Quality:

Originating from Indonesian blackwater swamps, they demand highly stable, warm tropical heat (24-28°C / 75-82°F) and pristine conditions. They possess very low tolerance for hard, alkaline water. They strongly prefer soft, slightly acidic water (GH 2-10, pH 6.0 - 7.0). The addition of botanical leaf litter (Catappa Leaves) to release healing tannins is highly recommended to replicate their natural habitat and enhance their colors. Flawless biological filtration and weekly 20-30% water changes are unconditionally mandatory.

Compatibility & Tankmates:

Compatibility is absolutely stellar due to their completely peaceful, non-aggressive nature. They are the perfect, colorful centerpiece for a peaceful Southeast Asian or mixed nano-community tank. They MUST NEVER be housed with massive, highly aggressive, or predatory fish (like Cichlids or massive Angelfish) that will intimidate or eat them. Excellent companions include peaceful bottom-dwellers (Corydoras, Kuhli Loaches), Otocinclus, and other small, peaceful schooling fish (like Harlequin Rasboras, small Tetras, or peaceful Gouramis).

Aquarium Breeding:

Breeding is moderately easy and highly rewarding. They are prolific egg-scatterers that provide absolutely no parental care. Breeding requires a dedicated, dimly lit tank with intensely soft, acidic water and massive thickets of fine-leaved plants (like Java Moss). Following a spectacular, flaring courtship display by the intensely red male, the female scatters hundreds of adhesive eggs over the vegetation. The adults MUST be removed immediately after spawning, as they are voracious cannibals and will eat their own eggs.

Risks & Diseases:

The absolute greatest physical risk is severe stress, faded colors, and immune collapse if kept in excessively bright, unplanted tanks with strong water flow or hard, alkaline water; dim lighting, soft water, and dense plants are unconditionally mandatory. The second major risk is lethal stress if schooling numbers are too low (under 6); the fish will become terrified. Finally, their small size makes them highly vulnerable to being swallowed whole by larger, semi-aggressive community fish.
