Nimbochromis venustus

The Giraffe Cichlid (*Nimbochromis venustus*) is one of the supreme "Super-Predators" of Lake Malawi (a true piscivore). Rapidly reaching 25 cm (10 inches) of pure muscle mass, this colossus is known worldwide for the juvenile and female pattern that faithfully remembers the spots of a giraffe: large irregular dark olive green or chocolate brown patches on a yellow or beige/golden background. But the real magic happens in the adult Alpha male: the yellow fades and his snout suddenly lights up with a blinding cobalt blue or iridescent sapphire with a blaze of bright yellow sulfur along the entire dorsal fin, maintaining the faded spots on the flanks. Although not as fiercely territorial as the Mbunas, he is a tactical shark: his murderous instinct is not for territory, but for pure sustenance. He will instantly swallow any fish that entirely enters his enormous mouth.

Description

Avoid Fragile Plants (Bottom Bulldozer):

Being huge and carnivorous fish, they do not eat green plants. But they physically uproot them. If you have planted delicate lawns or frail plants in the bottom, a single exhaust stroke of the frightened Giraffe or its courtship will make quintals of earth and plants fly into the air ruining the aquarium forever. Insert only robust plants tied to the stones (Anubias) or huge reeds of Vallisneria behind which he loves to hide to hunt.

Care and observations

It is not a Fish, it is a 10-inch Fake Shark:

When you buy it in the store at 5 centimeters (2 inches) in length, with those funny and adorable brown puppy giraffe spots, it seems a harmless pet fish. IT IS NOT. Within a year it will become a cyclopean and carnivorous half-pound predator, with a cobalt snout. If your aquarium is not an armored beast of 500 liters (130 gallons) and a meter and a half (5 feet) minimum of front glass, you will do a disservice both to him and to your wallet.

Magical Disappearance of Little Fishes:

NEVER buy it for a mixed or "community" aquarium. Its mouth, when it opens wide to hunt, extrudes forming a huge suction tube. ANY, and I repeat, ANY fish placed in the tank that is even remotely swallowable, will end up disappearing from your aquarium at night without a trace. Platies, Guppies, Corydoras (if he eats them he will also die suffocated by the corydoras' spines in his throat), but even young Yellow Labs or Peacocks: he will see them solely as a free snack. To be kept ONLY with giants of the same African breed.

The Feigning Death Tactic in Sand:

In nature and in your aquarium you will be able to witness its stunning hunting. Instead of swimming furiously, the Giraffe camouflages itself by sinking slightly into the open sand and turning on its side... feigning DEATH. It will remain motionless even for endless minutes. When a curious little fish approaches the fake spotted corpse thinking it is food, the Venustus darts with an explosion of a slingshot and gobbles it up in a tenth of a second.

Temperament: Prepotente, fiero e letalmente Predatorio. Non è un bullo attaccabrighe gratuito come un Melanochromis, ma non si fa mettere i piedi in testa da nessuno. Considera tutti i pesci piccoli della vasca, senza alcuna distinzione etica, come mangime vivo.
Diet: Carnivoro Predatore (Piscivoro puro). In natura sono cacciatori da imboscata sbalorditivi. In acquario, devono seguire una dieta iper-proteica e abbondante per non farli dimagrire: pellet di grossa pezzatura per ciclidi carnivori massicci (tipo Cichlid Gold), grossi bocconi di polpa di gamberetto (krill), lombrichi vivi, chironomus ed eviscerato di pesce bianco crudo. Cibo per Mbuna (solo vegetale) li farà ammalare di malnutrizione in mesi.

Sex ratio: Singolo Maschio (come Show Fish) o Harem (1 Maschio e 3 Femmine in vasche faraoniche). Sconsigliatissimo mettere 2 maschi. Da giovani e le femmine adulte mostrano la spiccata livrea 'a giraffa' giallo/marrone. Il maschio in fase riproduttiva Alpha perde quasi totalmente le macchie assumendo la faccia blu intenso cobalto (per questo in commercio spesso sembrano 'incolore' e sbiaditi a 5 cm).
Feeding frequency: 1-2 volte al giorno o a giorni alterni per gli adulti massicci (per simulare il metabolismo predatorio saltuario ed evitare danni al fegato e obesità grassa).
Bioload: Altissimo (Gigantesco carico organico). Cambi d'acqua massicci obbligatori (fino al 50% settimanale).
Flow: Corrente da Moderata a Lieve. Si aggirano tra le canne alte delle piante acquatiche senza sforzo.
Reproduction: Incubatori orali. Le covate sono gigantesche (fino a 100 enormi uova e piccoli). Riproduzione difficile in vasche di comunità per l'aggressività e l'ingombro del corteggiamento. Il maschio si appoggia a piatto sul fondale in un largo cratere di sabbia per attirare le femmine tremando.
Compatibility: Piscivoro Assoluto. Se entra nella sua bocca spalancata (che si dilata enormemente a tubo), se lo mangia. DIVIETO ASSOLUTO: Qualsiasi pesce di branco amazzonico, Neon, Corydoras (se li ingoia le spine dorsali del Corydoras gli sventreranno la gola uccidendolo), ma anche piccoli Ciclidi del Malawi (come giovani Labidochromis o Aulonocara). Mantenimento esclusivo con colossi di pari grandezza (Aristochromis, Dimidiochromis, Cyrtocara moorii).
