Description

Geographic Origin and Biotope: Endemic to the rocky littoral of Lake Tanganyika. Lives in crevices of underwater cliffs at 5-40 m depth in crystal-clear, extremely hard, strongly alkaline water.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Small cichlid (max 10 cm), elongated and slender, perfectly adapted for slipping into rock crevices. Small terminal mouth with tiny conical teeth for picking invertebrates off rock walls.

Social Behavior: Monogamous and murderously territorial. An established pair will chase and kill any third conspecific within hours. In small tanks, mismatched pairs result in the male killing the female.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Uniformly brilliant lemon yellow — one of the most intense solid colorations among African cichlids. Sexual dimorphism nearly nonexistent; venting is the only reliable method.

Care and observations

Tank Setup: 100+ liters per pair. Dense limestone rockwork maze with multiple-exit crevices to prevent the subordinate from being cornered. Fine sand or coral substrate. No plants.

Feeding: Carnivorous micro-predator. Needs bloodworms, brine shrimp, mysis, high-quality carnivore pellets. Avoid vegetable-based foods: the digestive tract cannot process plant fibers.

Water Quality: Tanganyikan water: pH 7.8-9.0, GH 10-25, KH 10-20. Soft acidic water is lethal. Temperature 24-27°C, oversized filtration.

Compatibility: Compatible with Tanganyikan cichlids occupying different niches: Julidochromis, Cyprichromis, shell-dwellers. Avoid other N. leleupi and all Malawi cichlids.

Reproduction: Cave spawner. Eggs glued to the ceiling of a narrow crevice. The pair becomes extremely dangerous during the 2-3 week fry-guarding phase.

Risks: Bloat (abdominal swelling) is the mortal nemesis: caused by poor diet, it manifests as extreme bloating, lethargy, and white feces. Once advanced, almost always fatal.
