The Red Zebra (*Metriaclima estherae*) is the 'Tank Buster' Cichlid par excellence of Mbuna setups, famous for introducing true solid 'Red-Orange' color into African lake tanks. Despite the name, females in nature exhibit O-morph phenotypes (Orange/pale orange and sometimes mottled, 'OB'), while the vast majority of commercial male Red Zebras have been selectively bred for decades to become a blinding Fluorescent Mandarin Orange (instead of the native light blue B-morph). Massive, corpulent and tall (up to 12-14 cm / 5-5.5 inches), they are the aquatic equivalent of bulldozers: not only are they extremely aggressive, but their immense physical strength allows them to move kilograms of gravel in a few hours and demolish unstable furnishings.

Description

Chromatic Racism:

Do not buy any other orange or red Cichlid or fish to put in the tank (for example a Labidochromis hongi red top). The orange Estherae sees any fish of its own color and size as an unacceptable threat to its Harem and will literally do anything to persecute it to death until it cuts off its fins.

Care and observations

The Glass-Smashing Bulldozer (Secure the Rocks!):

Behind that wonderful orange color is a crazy bricklayer. Red Zebras literally hate the sand in your aquarium. They spend whole days taking it in their mouths and spitting it out, creating huge empty holes (veritable quarries). IF YOUR BIG ROCKS DO NOT TOUCH THE BOTTOM GLASS, the fish will dig until it removes the sand from under them. The collapsed rocks will fall breaking the aquarium glass into a thousand pieces and flooding your house. Lay the stones on the protected glass, THEN pour the sand.

Death by Sausage (Intolerant Pure Herbivores):

They are big and mean, so instinct will tell you to give them dried shrimp, meat, and standard protein food. You will condemn them to an atrocious death. Their stomach is made only to scrape an invisible veil of green algae from flat stones. If they eat meat proteins, their intestine collapses. They fill with air, their belly deforms swollen like a balloon ("Malawi Bloat") and they die constipated in terrible suffering in 3 days. Only pure dry feed of 100% Spirulina Algae and zucchini.

The Murderous Male and the Harem:

A dominant Red Zebra male (you will recognize him by his massive size and the conspicuous round yellow dots - fake eggs - thick on the lower fin) is a violent and sex-crazed despot. If you buy a male and only one female in a tank under 150 liters (40 gallons), he will chase her so wildly and uninterruptedly with headbutts that the female will die from stress and exhaustion. You MUST buy him AT LEAST 5 females, so he will go crazy distributing his morbid and brutal attentions over the whole group, and the females can take turns resting in a cave.

Temperament: Pugnace, prepotente e implacabile. È il 'Bullo' della vasca. Il Red Zebra maschio (sia la variante arancio che quella bluara) rivendicherà la caverna più grande per sé e ne difenderà ferocemente un ampio perimetro, cacciando pesantemente chiunque si avvicini alla sua preziosa algata.
Diet: Erbivoro Estremo / Brucatore. ASSOLUTAMENTE SENSIBILE AL BLOAT. La morte per blocco intestinale da eccesso di proteine è la fine di quasi tutti gli Estherae mal gestiti. Scaglie e granuli Premium a base di sola e pura Spirulina verde, accompagnate da foglie di lattuga, spinaci sbollentati e zucchine fissate sul fondo con un peso. Mai chironomus o tubifex.

Sex ratio: Harem Gigante Tassativo (1 maschio e 4-6 femmine). Date le enormi dimensioni e la forza fisica del maschio durante il brutale corteggiamento, l'unica femmina morirebbe percossa o esausta in una settimana. In commercio, sia maschi che femmine (linea arancio) sembrano uguali: il maschio adulto sviluppa una vistosa gobba nucale frontale e molti più ocelli gialli accesi sulla pinna anale (da 4 a 7 finti 'uovi' visibili).
Feeding frequency: 1 volta al giorno (O 2 piccolissime). Molto ingordi. Vanno tenuti leggermente affamati affinché svolgano il loro lavoro naturale: raschiare le pietre dell'acquario per mangiarsi l'Aufwuchs verde.
Bioload: Alto (Taglia notevole, scarti ingenti e scavo massiccio che solleva sedimenti).
Flow: Corrente Molto Forte. Pompe di movimento poderose li stimolano a fare sport e distraggono l'aggressività interna.
Reproduction: Incubatori orali materni attivissimi. Le femmine possono deporre fino a 40 uova enormi. Per proteggerle in acquario di comunità, la madre dal gozzo spropositato va isolata o spostata in una rocciata inespugnabile. Attenzione: si ibridano facilissimamente in modo letale (creando mutanti genetici impuri) con quasi ogni altro Pseudotropheus, Metriaclima o Cynotilapia se mancano femmine della loro razza.
Compatibility: Mantenimento solo con grossi 'Tank Buster' del Malawi altrettanto spietati (es. Labeotropheus, Melanochromis auratus). OTTIMI per staccare dal blu coi gialli (Labidochromis), ma bisogna avere vasche enormi. DIVIETO TASSATIVO: Mantenere altre specie di pesci arancioni o rosse (l'aggressività conspecifica cromatica scatterà). MAI CON PESCI TROPICALI COMUNI o Loricaridi amazzonici (Plecostomus) che verrebbero sbranati per dispetto.
