Black-banded Leporinus
Leporinus fasciatus
The Black-banded Leporinus (*Leporinus fasciatus*) is a fish that enchants with its intense yellow and black "prisoner striped" livery and its peculiar hare-like snout. Reaching a powerful size of 30 cm (12 inches), this colorful torpedo possesses a strong character and extraordinarily sharp teeth, designed to gnaw plants, scrape algae and, unfortunately for the unwary, tear the fins of other tankmates to pieces. It is a splendid, tireless, and long-lived fish, but its quarrelsome nature and propensity for jumping and destroying plants require "Monster" aquariums managed by expert hands.

Description
Geographical Origin:
Widely distributed, it mainly inhabits river basins with strong currents and flooded zones, thriving among intricate roots in Venezuela, Guyana, the Amazon basin, and down to Argentina.
Hare Morphology (Cleft Lip):
The scientific name *Leporinus* literally means "hare-like" or "little hare". This is due to the pointed snout and the prominent paired upper incisors (resembling the dentition of a rodent). A fascinating detail: the vertical black stripes divide (increase in number) as the fish ages and lengthens.
Care and observations
Tank Setup (The Crazy Jumpers):
The setup requires a 150 cm (5-foot) length dedicated entirely to active mid-sized swimmers. The tank must have no vegetation (except perhaps large Anubias glued to wood). The biggest risk with this fish is aerial escape. A lid is not enough: *Leporinus* are able to find the passage openings for the filter tubes and jump through them with geometric precision, ending up dried on the floor. Seal every opening with nets or sponges.
Feeding (Keeping Minds Occupied):
In nature, *Leporinus* spend the day continuously nibbling (grazing) rocks and wood. In the aquarium, if the diet is monotonous or provided in a single large meal, they will get bored and vent their predatory chewing instinct on the tails of other fish. Offer coarse chunks of thick weighted zucchini, raw potatoes, or hard woody pellets that take time to erode, thus discouraging attacks on tankmates.
The Beginner's Trap (The Fins):
Often dealers sell it when it measures only 4-5 cm (2 inches), proposing it as a peaceful striped algae-eating cleaner. Placed in tanks with Discus, Angelfish, or Gouramis, the *Leporinus* (once acclimated) will quickly mutilate the poor tankmates with its powerful incisors.
Fish profile
- Temperament
- Aggressivo, prepotente e famoso per essere un famelico "fin-nipper" (morditore di pinne). Diventa particolarmente scontroso con i suoi simili in acquari stretti.
- Diet
- Onnivoro a forte prevalenza erbivora. I loro incisivi sporgenti triturano qualsiasi cosa. In natura brucano alghe, foglie, e mangiano vermi o piccoli pesci.

- Jump risk
- Covered tank required
- Reproduction
- Raramente ottenuta in cattività. Sono pesci ovipari che deponento uova tra la fitta vegetazione ripariale, ma le condizioni ormonali per l'accoppiamento sono difficili da replicare.
- Compatibility
- Mantenere solo in comunità XXL. Ottimi compagni sono i grandi Ciclidi Centro e Sudamericani aggressivi (es. Midas, Oscar, Terrori Verdi), grandi Loricaridi (Panaque) e Pacu. Assolutamente NON tenere con pesci lenti o con pinne a velo (es. Discus, Scalari, Pesci Rossi) perché le ridurranno a monconi sanguinolenti.
