Vampire Pleco (L029)

Leporacanthicus galaxias

The Vampire Pleco (*Leporacanthicus galaxias* or L029) is one of the most fascinating and fierce benthic predators among armored catfish. The name 'Vampire' does not derive from hematophagous habits, but from its astonishing dentition: the upper jaw houses two long, sharp fang-like teeth. Deep black entirely covered with brilliant white dots reminiscent of a starry sky (hence *galaxias*), this imposing 25 cm (10 inch) carnivore is the terror of snails, bivalves, and aquatic crustaceans, making it a unique guest for specialized South American tanks.

Description

Geographical Origin:

Endemic to the mighty currents of the Rio Tocantins (Pará, Brazil), a river that, like the neighboring Xingu, flows rapidly over beds of bare rock and sand.

Taxonomy and Confusion:

There are various "Vampire Plecos" (*Leporacanthicus*). The L029 (galaxias) is the most famous. Others include the L007 (Vampire Pleco) and the L240 (Galaxy Pleco). All share the peculiar oral anatomy (reduced upper lip, fleshy lower lip, and large conical fangs), the flattened body shape, and the high armor.

Social Behavior:

Disliked by other bottom dwellers. It is extremely territorial. A Vampire Pleco will use its enormous muscular sucker, lethal teeth, and armored odontodes on the sides of its head (often colored in a sinister stark white) to rout any other *Plecostomus* from its burrow. Pair it only with robust fish of equal or larger size that live in the upper water column, such as huge schools of Tetras (e.g., *Chalceus*) or Datnoids.

Care and observations

Tank Setup:

A 25 cm (10 inch) predator needs a rocky fortress in an aquarium over 120 cm (4 feet). The rocks (heavy granite or slate blocks) must be firmly wedged or glued with silicone: the incredible muscular power of this pleco, when it decides to expand its nocturnal burrow, can cause devastating landslides in the aquarium. It loves long, flat crevices between rocks to wedge itself into. The water must imitate the turbulence of its native river: use dual powerheads. Lighting should be dim or shielded by floaters to encourage its evening emergence.

Diet:

The most common reason this fish suffers or becomes a killer to its tankmates is incorrect feeding (making it eat spirulina algae tablets). It is a specialized carnivore. In nature, its "vampire teeth" are used to violently extract water snails from their protective shells (escargot) or dismember freshwater crabs. In the aquarium it demands heavy feeding: whole frozen shrimp, pieces of squid, white fish fillets, and large half-opened mussels. It will eagerly eat any infestation of pest snails (ramshorn or trumpet snails).

Water Quality:

The debris from a meat and fish diet decomposes much faster than plant residues, producing deadly ammonia and phosphate spikes. Impeccable filtration and rigorous, massive partial water changes (up to 50% weekly) are non-negotiable.

Fish profile

Temperament

Sex ratio
Tenere preferibilmente esemplari singoli.
Flow
Corrente Molto Forte
Reproduction
Rarissima. Avviene in fessure lunghissime e strette (solitamente tubi in PVC ciechi lunghi oltre mezzo metro) esposte a correnti violentissime.
Compatibility
Da abbinare a pesci di stazza medio-grande a nuoto libero (Silver Dollars, grandi Ciclidi sudamericani non di fondo). Sterminerà istantaneamente qualsiasi lumaca (Ampullarie o Neritine) o gamberetto in vasca.
