The *Laetacara curviceps* (commonly known as Flag Acara or Smiling Cichlid) is the forgotten jewel of fishkeeping. Often ignored because of its dull juvenile coloration, this small Acara transforms into a breathtaking, stocky and robust adult fish, exhibiting a deep turquoise/teal body, dotted with silver, a firm black line along the eye and fins bordered in bright red. Less chemically demanding than Rams and decidedly less aggressive than Apistogramma, the Curviceps combines fantastic rusticity with an adorable temperament, being perhaps the calmest and most peaceful cichlid that can be housed in an 80 cm (30-inch) community aquarium.

The Smiling Cichlid:

The genus *Laetacara* was scientifically named by combining the words to identify the Acara (the fish) and the Latin prefix for "happiness". This is because the black scales around their small mouth form a natural curve that makes them look in a very funny way as if they are smiling amicably all the time.

If you want an intelligent cichlid in a tank with Panda Corydoras and Neons without them being bullied or skinned alive, the Flag Acara is the absolute answer. In addition to its innate calmness, its greatest virtue in the tank is temperature. Unlike Discus or Rams (which want scalding water at 29°C / 84°F), the Curviceps must live in cool water (23-25°C / 73-77°F). This allows you to save on the heater and keep 80% of the most common pet store species happy.
