The Glass Catfish (*Kryptopterus vitreolus*) is one of the most fascinating and iconic creatures in the aquatic world. As the name suggests, it possesses a completely transparent and diaphanous body: it is possible to clearly observe its silvery backbone, ribs and the tiny sac of internal organs located immediately behind the head. Reaching 6-8 cm (2.5-3 inches), it is equipped with two long sensory barbels on the snout. Unlike the vast majority of catfish that live hidden on the bottom, the Glass Fish is a mid-water swimmer that forms cohesive schools, hovering against the current in a sinuous and undulating swimming style that resembles that of a snake.

Description

Living Skeletons:

Their extreme transparency is due to the total absence of scales and a particular structure of the muscle fibers that hardly reflects light. Only the "silvery sac" behind the head is not transparent, because it contains the stomach, liver and gonads that must be protected from sunlight.

Care and observations

Loneliness Kills (Minimum 6 Specimens):

Being transparent prey fish, their only psychological defense in nature is the "group". If you buy 1 or 2 Glass Fish, they will spend their short lives huddled in panic behind the filter or under a root, they will stop eating and will die of stress within weeks. The mandatory minimum purchase to see them swimming in mid-water in confident formation is 6 specimens, ideally 10.

The Indicator of Death (The Milky White):

This fish gives you an instant visual diagnosis of its health and that of your aquarium. A healthy and unstressed Glass Fish is like freshly cleaned glass: you can clearly see the background wall through its muscles. If you notice their body becoming opaque, whitish or "watered-down milk" color, it's an emergency: it means they are dying (often due to ammonia spikes or lethal temperature shocks).

Lovers of Moving Water:

Unlike most small Asian fish (like Bettas or Gouramis) that love still waters, Glass Fish are rheophilic (stream) creatures. Position the filter outflow so as to create a clear current in an area of the aquarium: they will all gather there, swimming against the current in unison waiting for food to arrive carried by the water.

Temperament: Estremamente pacifico, vulnerabile e timido. Si spaventano facilissimamente. Non attaccheranno mai nessun pesce, e al contrario soccomberanno o smetteranno di mangiare se infastiditi da coinquilini chiassosi o mordaci.
Diet: Insettivoro / Zooplanctivoro. In natura si nutrono di insetti e zooplancton alla deriva. Le loro bocche sono piccole e in posizione mediana. Spesso ignorano il cibo secco che cade sul fondo; richiedono micro-pellet galleggianti/a lento affondamento, larve di zanzara, chironomus bianco e daphnia viva o surgelata somministrati in corrente.

Sex ratio: Gruppo obbligatorio (più sono, meglio è, ideale 10+). I sessi sono virtualmente indistinguibili visivamente. Se tenuti in gruppi inferiori a 5 esemplari, si stressano a morte e si rintanano per sempre.
Feeding frequency: 1-2 volte al giorno, preferibilmente all'alba o al tramonto quando sono più fiduciosi.

Flow: Corrente da Moderata a Forte. Amano stazionare costantemente rivolti contro il getto di mandata del filtro.
Reproduction: Quasi impossibile e sconosciuta negli acquari domestici. Quasi tutti gli esemplari in commercio sono pescati in natura (Wild Caught). Sembra che la riproduzione in natura sia innescata dalle piogge monsoniche e dai conseguenti enormi sbalzi chimici e termici.
Compatibility: Mantenimento ottimale in acquari di comunità asiatici molto tranquilli. DA EVITARE CATEGORICAMENTE pesci aggressivi (Ciclidi, Betta) o pesci palla/Barbi Tigre che morderanno i loro lunghi bargigli. Perfetti con Rasbore, Tetra gentili (Neon), Corydoras, Kuhli Loach e Otocinclus.
