Snowball Pleco

Hypancistrus inspector

A velvety black body studded with round, regular white dots like snowflakes — hence the name. L102. Less demanding than many Hypancistrus but still a fish for experienced keepers. Unlike herbivorous plecos, it is predominantly carnivorous — prefers protein over vegetables. Reaches 12–15 cm. Needs warm, clean water with current. Strictly nocturnal.

Description

Geographical Origin & Biotope:

The Snowball Pleco (Hypancistrus inspector), also known scientifically by its L-number L201, is a breathtakingly striking, carnivorous bottom-dweller natively endemic to the deep, exceptionally fast-flowing, highly oxygenated blackwater stretches of the upper Orinoco River in Venezuela. Their natural biotope is defined by profound darkness, rushing, tannin-stained acidic water, and highly complex geological structures formed by massive, stacked granite boulders deeply interspersed with submerged driftwood networks.

Taxonomy & Morphology:

Scientifically classified within the Loricariidae family, they belong to the *Hypancistrus* genus, which fundamentally dictates their biology. Unlike the massive Common Pleco, they are a strictly dwarf species. Fully mature adults reach a highly manageable maximum of 10.0 to 12.0 centimeters (4.0-4.7 inches) in length. Most critically, their sucker-mouth is small and lacks the heavy scraping teeth of algae-eaters. They are biologically engineered to suck up meaty foods (insect larvae, crustaceans) hidden in deep rock crevices.

Social Behavior:

They are strictly nocturnal, incredibly secretive, and highly reclusive bottom-dwellers. During the bright hours of the day, they will wedge themselves so tightly into dark rock crevices or ceramic breeding caves that they become virtually invisible. They only emerge in total darkness to forage. They are entirely peaceful toward mid-water schooling fish. However, like all *Hypancistrus*, males are fiercely, violently territorial over their chosen caves and will aggressively attack other bottom-dwellers that approach their domain.

Coloration & Sexual Dimorphism:

Sexual dimorphism is subtle but distinct in mature adults. Mature males develop a broader, more muscular head, and specifically, heavy growth of long, fleshy odontodes (spikes) along their pectoral fins and cheeks. Females possess a plumper, rounder belly and significantly shorter cheek spikes. Their coloration is an absolute, striking masterpiece: the entire body is an intensely saturated, deep, velvety jet-black, completely covered in stark, highly contrasting, perfectly round, brilliant white spots (the "snowballs").

Care and observations

Tank Setup:

The aquarium architecture MUST flawlessly replicate the dark, fast-flowing boulder networks of the Orinoco. A minimum 100-liter (25-gallon) LONG tank is absolutely mandatory for a single adult. The tank MUST feature exceptionally powerful, unidirectional water flow and massive oxygenation. The absolute, non-negotiable requirement is the provision of numerous dark, tight-fitting ceramic breeding caves and heavy rockwork. Bright lighting will cause severe stress; dim lighting and dark substrate are unconditionally mandatory.

Diet & Feeding:

They are highly specialized carnivores/omnivores. CRITICAL WARNING: They are NOT algae eaters, and they DO NOT eat wood. Assuming a Snowball Pleco will clean green algae from your glass is a fatal mistake; they will starve to death. In the aquarium, their diet MUST be heavily protein-focused and provided strictly AFTER lights-out. Daily offerings of high-quality sinking carnivore pellets, and massive amounts of frozen meaty foods (bloodworms, mysis shrimp, chopped prawn) are unconditionally mandatory.

Water Quality:

Originating from the fast-flowing upper Orinoco, they possess an absolute, uncompromising demand for extremely high water temperatures and pristine conditions. They STRICTLY require exceptionally warm tropical heat (27-30°C / 80-86°F). Keeping them in standard, cooler tropical tanks (24°C) will destroy their metabolism and kill them. They demand extremely clean, highly oxygenated, soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic water (GH 4-10, pH 6.0 - 7.0). Flawless filtration and massive weekly water changes are mandatory.

Compatibility & Tankmates:

Compatibility is strictly limited by their absolute requirement for extremely high temperatures (30°C) and violent water flow. They MUST NEVER be housed with standard, cooler-water tropical fish (like Corydoras, Neon Tetras, or Guppies), which will burn out and die in the intense heat. They MUST NEVER be housed with massive, aggressive Cichlids. They are the perfect bottom-dweller for a specialized "Discus" or "Geophagus" tank. Excellent companions include heat-loving schooling fish like Cardinal Tetras or Rummy-nose Tetras.

Aquarium Breeding:

Breeding the Snowball Pleco is highly possible and incredibly rewarding in a dedicated, high-heat setup. They are highly secretive cave-spawners. Breeding requires pristine, very warm water and tight-fitting, dead-end ceramic breeding caves. The female lays a clutch of 20-40 large, sticky yellow eggs deep inside the cave. The male then violently evicts her and takes over completely, fiercely guarding and fanning the eggs for weeks, absolutely refusing to eat until the large, yolk-sac-heavy fry emerge.

Risks & Diseases:

The absolute greatest physical risk is lethal starvation; owners falsely believe they are algae-eaters and fail to provide the massive amounts of sinking meaty carnivore pellets they require to survive. The second major risk is lethal metabolic failure caused by keeping them in standard, cool aquarium temperatures; extreme heat (28°C+) is unconditionally mandatory. Finally, housing multiple males in a small tank without numerous distinct caves guarantees brutal, often fatal territorial combat.
