Description
Geographic Origin and Biotope: Immense distribution from Costa Rica all the way south to Argentina. Thrives in the harshest environments: stagnant swamps, oxygen-depleted backwaters, and mud-holes filled with rotting wood.
Taxonomy and Morphology: A colossal, primitive predator of the Erythrinidae family. Easily reaches 50-55 cm (20-22 inches) in captivity. Built like a log: thick, cylindrical, and heavily armored in large, rigid scales. The head is a massive block of bone. The jaws possess a horrifying crush force and are lined with jagged, massive canine teeth. It has a modified swim bladder acting as a lung, allowing it to breathe atmospheric air.
Social Behavior: Intensely solitary, lethargic, and violent. Spends all day sitting completely motionless on the bottom like a dead log. At dusk, it turns into a relentless serial killer. Highly territorial. They are famously aggressive toward their owners and will lunge and bite hands/arms that enter their tank during maintenance.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Pure mud/wood camouflage. Base color is a mottled, dirty dark brown, grey, or olive green, heavily overlaid with darker bands and splotches that it can lighten or darken based on mood. The eyes are cold and often have a milky/hazy look to them. Females are broader and often larger than males.
Care and observations
Tank Setup: Requires a monumentally large tank: MINIMUM footprint of 200x80 cm (6.5 x 2.5 feet) for a single adult. Decor must be indestructible: zero live plants, only massive heavy boulders and giant PVC pipes/hollow logs for hiding. A WEIGHTED, SHATTERPROOF LID IS MANDATORY. They are incredibly strong jumpers and will easily smash thin glass or knock off unweighted lids. Leave an air gap so they can gulp surface oxygen.
Feeding: Apex Carnivore. The bite can crush bone. Feed whole fish (smelt, trout chunks), whole shell-on shrimp, dead frogs, and jumbo earthworms. You MUST use long metal tongs—never use your fingers. Adults should only be fed 2-3 times a week; overfeeding leads to massive organ failure (fatty liver) and uncontrollable bioloads.
Water Quality: Practically indestructible. Can survive freezing cold (18°C/64°F), extreme heat (30°C/86°F), severe droughts, and totally stagnant, polluted water. Adapts to pH 5.5-8.0. However, in an aquarium, you must provide colossal biological filtration (sumps) to process their massive, rotting carnivorous waste output to prevent the tank water from becoming toxic.
Compatibility: THE GOLDEN RULE: Best kept as a completely SOLITARY pet in a Species Tank. If kept in massive community tanks (thousands of gallons), tankmates must be giant and heavily armored (huge Pacu, giant Plecos, Stingrays). It will hunt, kill, and swallow (or bite in half) anything else. Absolutely intolerant of its own kind; two Wolf Fish in a standard tank will fight to the death.
Reproduction: Extremely rare in captivity. They dig mud pits and viciously guard their eggs against all intruders.
Risks: 1. SEVERE HAND/FINGER INJURIES to the owner during tank cleaning. 2. Breaking glass heaters with their jaws (use titanium heaters or in-line filters). 3. Escaping by smashing through weak lids.
