Zebra Tilapia / Hornet
Heterotilapia buttikoferi
The infamous 'Convict on Steroids'. A massive, 40 cm (16-inch) African colossus dressed in brilliant black and white vertical stripes. Extremely intelligent and dog-like, but famously psychopathic: as an adult, it will systematically murder tankmates regardless of their size and rip apart any aquarium decor. Strictly for isolation tanks.

Description
Geographic Origin and Biotope: Broadly distributed in coastal rivers and estuaries of West Africa (Liberia, Guinea-Bissau, Sierra Leone). Thrives in sluggish, muddy, deeply vegetated channels, highly adaptable to stagnant swamps with low oxygen.
Taxonomy and Morphology: A gargantuan cichlid. Formerly Tilapia buttikoferi, now placed in the Heterotilapia genus. Reaches an imposing 35-40 cm (14-16 inches) and weighs several pounds. The body is extremely deep, thick, and muscular. Features an incredibly robust jaw packed with crushing teeth, evolved to easily pulverize hard snail shells, crustaceans, and thick plant roots. They grow blisteringly fast.
Social Behavior: Highly interactive and personable; they will eagerly beg for food and recognize their owner's face. However, they are downright PSYCHOPATHIC in the tank. Up until 15 cm (6 inches), they often behave acceptably in big-fish communities. Once they hit 20 cm, a switch flips: they become homicidally aggressive. They will brutally and sadistically ram, bite, and murder other fish (even those larger than themselves) simply because they exist. They also constantly redesign the tank, moving pounds of gravel every night.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Bold, high-contrast 'prisoner' suit. The base color is cream-white or pale yellow, slashed completely by 8 or 9 intensely thick, vertical coal-black bands (giving the 'Zebra' or 'Hornet' moniker). In massive alpha adults, the whole body can flush almost completely dark/black. Giant adult males are incredibly deep-bodied and often develop a severe, fleshy nuchal hump (bump) on the forehead.
Care and observations
Tank Setup: Treat the tank like a supermax prison cell. Minimum 150-180 cm (5-6 feet) tank FOR A SINGLE ISOLATED SPECIMEN. NO LIVE PLANTS WHATSOEVER: they will not just uproot them, they will shred them into confetti and eat them. Decor must be IMMENSE: massive boulders and driftwood that are ideally siliconed to the glass. A Buttikoferi will grab 3-lb rocks in its mouth and hurl them against the glass or heater out of boredom. Heaters MUST be titanium, and filter intakes must be protected with heavy-duty PVC guards to prevent the fish from biting through them.
Feeding: Voracious Macro-Omnivore. The definition of a garbage disposal. In the wild, they eat huge amounts of plant matter and detritus. Feed a massive diet of jumbo floating cichlid pellets, whole raw zucchini, romaine lettuce, and massive earthworms. Best treat: drop in whole live aquarium snails (mystery or ramshorn); you will hear the loud *CRACK* as the Tilapia crushes the shells with its jaw plates. Limit high-fat meats (beef) to avoid fatty liver disease.
Water Quality: Indestructible. Can survive almost anything: ammonia spikes, horrible pollution, and even slightly brackish water. pH 6.5-8.0+. Temp 22-28°C (72-82°F). However, because they eat and poop like cows, you MUST have colossal external canister filtration or a giant sump, doing massive weekly water changes to prevent the tank from smelling like a sewer.
Compatibility: THE ULTIMATE KILLER. Highly recommended to keep as a 'WET PET' in absolute solitary confinement. If you attempt a Monster Fish community (with giant Oscars, Arowanas, Pacus, or Plecos), it is only a matter of time before the Tilapia snaps and brutally mutilates the others to death. BEWARE OF YOUR HANDS: if you stick your hand in the tank to move a rock, a 16-inch adult WILL charge and bite you hard enough to draw serious blood.
Reproduction: Extremely easy but violently hazardous. They spawn up to 1000 eggs on flat rocks. However, if the pair has a slight disagreement, the massive male will literally tear the female to shreds, killing her overnight.
Risks: 1. MASSACRE OF THE ENTIRE TANK: guaranteed death for any tankmates once the Tilapia reaches sub-adulthood. 2. Shattering glass heaters and filter pipes with its jaws. 3. Breaking aquarium glass by hurling heavy rocks. 4. Painful, bloody bites to the aquarist's fingers.
