Red Wolf Fish
Erythrinus erythrinus
The colorful, dwarf cousin of the giant Wolf Fish. Maxing out at 20-25 cm, it packs all the prehistoric brutality and nasty teeth of the giant into a manageable, bright red-and-violet package. An incredibly vicious ambush predator.

Description
Geographic Origin and Biotope: Broadly distributed in South America. Inhabits extreme environments similar to its giant cousin: isolated stagnant ponds, drying mud-holes, and heavily vegetated swamps with virtually zero oxygen.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Erythrinidae family. The 'dwarf' of the Wolf Fishes, reaching only 20-25 cm (8-10 inches). Retains the brutal morphology: blunt massive head, torpedo-like muscular body, and jaws lined with terrifying, sharp conical teeth. Like all Erythrinids, it uses a modified swim bladder to gulp and breathe atmospheric air directly from the surface.
Social Behavior: Benthic ambush predator. It is more active during the day than the giant Hoplias, but still spends hours lurking motionlessly under driftwood or in PVC pipes. When food approaches, its strike is unimaginably fast and violent. It is highly aggressive, fiercely territorial, and utterly fearless.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Unlike the drab giant Wolf Fish, this species is stunning. The base is dark olive or violet/grey, but when excited, dominant, or well-fed, the flanks and belly ignite in a brilliant flush of FIRE RED, intense orange, or neon purple. The fins are darkly mottled. Adult males possess a dramatically longer, more pointed dorsal fin than females.
Care and observations
Tank Setup: Because of its manageable size, it can be housed in a 100-120 cm (40-48 inch) tank. MUST have hiding spots: massive PVC pipes, clay tubes, or dense driftwood tangles. A HEAVY, COMPLETELY SEALED LID IS NON-NEGOTIABLE. In the wild, they naturally leap out of drying puddles to slither across mud to new water; they will escape through any tiny hole in the lid. Ensure an air gap exists between the water and the lid so they can breathe.
Feeding: Strict Carnivore. MUST be weaned onto dead foods. Use long tongs (never fingers) to wiggle earthworms (their absolute favorite), chunks of white fish fillet, thawed shrimp, and mussels. Do not feed live feeder goldfish, which carry parasites and destroy vitamin B1 reserves. They will often readily accept large sinking carnivore pellets.
Water Quality: Practically indestructible, capable of living in anoxic mud. Adapts easily to pH 5.5-7.5. Temp 23-28°C (73-82°F). Despite their hardiness, you must provide excellent biological filtration to break down their massive protein-heavy waste output.
Compatibility: Will ruthlessly hunt, kill, and eat anything under 70% of its own body length. Best kept as a solitary 'Wet Pet'. Can be housed with robust, similarly sized fish that occupy different water levels: large armored Plecos, massive Doradids, or large, tough Cichlids. NEVER house two Red Wolf Fish males together; they will tear each other to shreds.
Reproduction: Rare but achievable. They dig pits in the gravel. The male becomes a relentless demon guarding the eggs, and will kill the female if she is not removed immediately after spawning.
Risks: 1. MASSACRE: it will annihilate standard community fish overnight. 2. Escaping the tank through impossibly small gaps in the lid. 3. Fatal fatty liver disease if fed mammal meat (beef heart, pork).
