Devario aequipinnatus

The Giant Danio (*Devario aequipinnatus*) is the exact definition of a muscular aquatic torpedo. Similar in shape to a miniature trout, it is one of the most robust, fastest and most massive cyprinids (up to 12-15 cm / 5-6 inches) available in the commercial circuit. Sporting a shiny steel-blue metallic body, intersected by horizontal lines and broken golden dashes, it is a spectacle of pure athletic power. Its schooling swim is so frantic and unstoppable that it transforms any aquarium into a race track. Unfortunately, this colossal kinetic energy makes it unsuitable for 90% of average home aquariums.

Heavyweight Jumpers:

The lid of your aquarium cannot be light. The accelerations to the surface to catch gnats or escape are so violent that adult Giant Danios, jumping out of the water, can literally smash through light mesh covers or knock off poorly fitted soft plastic covers.

Care and observations

The Condemnation of Short Tanks:

It's easy to buy a cute 5 cm (2-inch) silvery fish. But this fish will grow as big as your hand. And unlike slow fish like Discus, the Giant Danio swims in lightning-fast dashes. If you put it in a tank under 120 cm (4 feet) - ideally 150 cm (5 feet) -, two things will happen quickly: either it will break its spine crashing at crazy speed against the opposite glass when frightened by a shadow, or it will stress the other fish to death with its incessant back and forth.

Oxygen Hyper-Saturation:

They come from tumultuous rivers at the foot of the Himalayas. This means two things: they want cool water (under 24°C / 75°F) and a gigantic level of dissolved oxygen in the water. In a still-water aquarium, at 28°C (82°F), they will gasp desperately, their night-blue livery will fade and they will get skin fungus. Use powerful wavemakers.

The Dither Fish of Monsters:

Although terrible for small companion fish or shy Asian labyrinth fish, Giant Danios are literally the kings of "Monster Tanks". They are very often used as "Target Fish" (Dither Fish) for huge territorial South American cichlids. Having a size that does not fit into the cichlids' mouths and being so fast that they are never caught, their bold presence defuses the aggression of the large fish.

Temperament: Pacifico per indole, ma caotico, prepotente e altamente stressante. Nuota incessantemente sfiorando la superficie dell'acqua, sfrecciando da un capo all'altro. Costituiscono un branco rigido guidato dal maschio alfa.
Diet: Insettivoro/Predatore di superficie. Voracissimi mangiatori onnivori. Aggrediscono la superficie per afferrare scaglie, ma in natura preferiscono insetti caduti. Nutrire con stick galleggianti, grilli liofilizzati e grossi chironomus. Ignorano spesso il cibo che cade sul fondo.

Reproduction: Dispersori di uova in acque correnti libere. Le uova non sono adesive e rotolano sul fondo tra i ciottoli di fiume sfuggendo ai genitori. Riprodurli è facile in vasche capienti con biglie di vetro sul fondo, dato l'appetito spietato dei genitori per le proprie stesse uova.
Compatibility: NON INSERIRE con pesci timidi o lenti (come Discus, Gourami o Betta): questi pesci moriranno d'infarto o di stenti (i Danio ruberanno tutto il cibo sulla superficie in un decimo di secondo). Eccezionali pesci 'dither' per enormi Ciclidi Sud/Centro americani (che non riescono a mangiarli per via della stazza e velocità) o grandi Botia Pagliaccio.
