The Blue Dolphin Cichlid (*Cyrtocara moorii*) is one of the most iconic and friendly creatures of the large 'Haps' (Haplochromis) group of Malawi. It gets its affectionate nickname from two unmistakable morphological characteristics: a gigantic nuchal hump (an adipose bump) that it develops on the forehead as it grows (making its head identical to that of a bottlenose dolphin) and a uniform bright metallic blue or sky blue coloration. Unique in its kind, this species is not strictly dimorphic: both males and females become blue and develop the hump (although more pronounced in the dominant male). Easily exceeding 20 cm (8 inches) in length, it is a good and placid giant that requires disproportionate tanks for free swimming and its peculiar parasitic foraging technique.

Description

The Parasite of Workers:

In nature it has an extraordinary intelligence. Instead of hunting hard, it chooses the large digging fish of the lake and follows them everywhere like a puppy at a distance of two centimeters. When the digger raises huge clouds of mud to make its den, the Dolphin enters the dust and comfortably freeloads all the worms thrown from the earth. Often in the aquarium it follows the breeder's gravel vacuum for hours hoping to freeload food.

Care and observations

It is not a Living Room Fish (The 5-Foot Problem):

When you buy it, it is a very sweet blue puppy of 4 centimeters (1.5 inches). In a couple of years it will become a blue "aquatic bison" of 22-25 centimeters (9-10 inches) in height and impressive weight, with a disproportionate head. If you do not have an aquarium of AT LEAST A METER AND A HALF (5 feet) in length (ideally two meters / 6 feet), this fish will atrophy, its spine will bend or, in a spurt of night terror, it will literally smash a 10 mm thick glass with a headbutt. It requires disproportionate spaces.

The Mbuna Death Trap:

If you make the crazy mistake of putting it in the aquarium with normal rock cichlids (Mbunas, e.g. the Yellow Lab or the Zebra), you sentence it to death. The Dolphin is a peaceful, slow and clumsy giant. The small Mbunas will use it as a punching bag: they will slowly crunch its whole tail, bite its eyes and steal all its food for months, until the gentle giant dies of heartbreak and starvation in a corner.

Remove All Sharp Rocks:

This animal moves like a majestic ocean liner throughout the tank, but if it is frightened by an open light, it darts blindly away. If your aquarium is full of pointed rocks (classic dragon stones) or twisted African woods, the Moorii will impale itself at crazy speed, decapitating itself or flaying half a side of scales. EMPTY tank, only an endless beach of smooth sand.

Fish profile

Temperament: Pacifico ma imponente. Gigante buono per eccellenza. Estremamente gregario, ama muoversi in banco. Diventa leggermente territoriale (con parate, ma raramente con danni fisici) solo durante la deposizione o verso pesci di colore identico azzurro solido (es. Placidochromis).
Diet: Micro-Predatore opportunista / Carnivoro. In natura ha un comportamento sbalorditivo: segue come un cane fedele i grandi ciclidi scavatori (es. Fossorochromis o Taeniolethrinops) e mangia la nuvola di crostacei e insetti sollevati dal loro scavo. In acquario va nutrito con alte quote di proteine pregiate: pellet per grandi ciclidi carnivori, gamberetti surgelati, mysis, krill e lombrichi vivi. NON nutrirli con cibi per Mbuna (alghe).
Tank level: Zona media e inferiore. Pattuglia ininterrottamente e con nuoto solenne l'intera lunghezza della vasca sabbiosa.

Sex ratio: Gruppo (1 Maschio e 3-4 Femmine o Banchi misti se la vasca è oltre i 2 metri). Come detto, il dimorfismo è assente nei colori (tutti azzurri). Il maschio Alpha si distinguerà per una stazza leggermente maggiore, la "gobba" da delfino estremamente più sporgente (a volte fino a coprirgli la vista in alto) e pinne anali più a punta.
Feeding frequency: 1-2 volte al giorno. Sono mangiatori voraci ma lenti e un po' goffi data la stazza; attenzione a non affamarli se in presenza di pesci più veloci.
Bioload: Molto Alto (Oltre i 20 cm di lunghezza con massa corporea notevole).
Flow: Corrente Moderata. Ottima ossigenazione, ma non amano fiumi in piena.
Reproduction: Incubatori orali materni. A differenza degli Mbuna, non usano grotte oscure, ma depongono su grosse pietre lisce e piatte posate sulla sabbia al centro della vasca. La femmina terrà l'enorme covata in bocca per ben 3-4 settimane, richiedendo isolamento estremo per non morire di inedia se disturbata.
Compatibility: Il cuore di una vasca per 'Grandi Haps'. Coinquilino perfetto per i Nimbochromis, i Frontosa (Tanganica) e i grandi Aulonocara pacifici. DIVIETO TASSATIVO: Mai metterli con gli Mbuna, anche quelli pacifici. Gli Mbuna sono nevrotici, mordaci e frenetici. Il Moorii, lento e placido, si vedrebbe le pinne mangiate e verrebbe bullizzato a morte dai pesciolini delle rocce grandi un terzo di lui.
