The *Cyphotilapia frontosa* is the undisputed and majestic King of Lake Tanganyika. This placid colossus, which can easily exceed 35 cm (14 inches) in length and reach 25 years of age, stands out for a monumental phenotype: a massive, candid or pale blue body, furrowed by 6-7 wide vertical black bands. The most stunning feature, from which it takes its name, is the huge nuchal hump (a gigantic adipose bump on the forehead) that it develops with age, prominent above all (but not exclusively) in dominant males. In sharp contrast to the neurotic smaller African cichlids, the Frontosa moves with solemn slowness and grace. However, behind its mask of a gentle giant, lies a formidable crepuscular hunter, designed to swallow whole fish.

Description

The Nocturnal Sucking Hunter:

Do not be moved by its clumsy and adorable slowness during the day. At night, in the dark, this big beast rises from the bottom. It has a gigantic and extrusible mouth. ANY small fish you put in the tank that could hypothetically pass through that mouth (including all bottom cleaners and small cichlids of other breeds up to 10 cm / 4 inches), the next morning will have vanished into thin air, literally sucked up while sleeping.

Care and observations

Do Not Buy the Puppy if You Do Not Have the Tank:

In the stores you will see dozens of tender little black and white striped Frontosas, barely 5 or 6 cm (2-2.5 inches) big. They will not tell you that that tiny fish lives 25 years and will transform into a monstrous grouper (an aquatic suitcase) of 35-40 centimeters (14-16 inches). If you do not own (or do not intend to buy) an imposing aquarium TWO METERS (6-7 feet) long (minimum 600 liters / 150 gallons), you are condemning this King to an atrocious death from bone atrophy. Leave them at the store.

The Eyes of the Abyss (Panic from Light):

A very frequent mistake that kills these fish or traumatizes them for life is to brightly illuminate the aquarium. Frontosas are creatures of the deep: in nature they live in almost total darkness, 40 or 60 meters (130-200 feet) below the surface of Tanganyika. If you use the very strong modern LED ceiling lights for aquatic plants, the Frontosa will be totally blinded, will become pale, will run away in terror never to come out of the cave again, stopping eating. Dim and bluish light, or tank covered with floating plants.

The Paradox of the Defenseless Giant:

The immense size will make you believe that he is an invincible boss. Fatal mistake. The Frontosa is a huge, slow, gentle and peaceful "big potato". If you put it in a tank with nervous rock cichlids of smaller size (Mbunas, like Demasoni or Tropheus), the big Frontosa will be massacred. The small fish will bully it, nibble all its fins and steal the food from its mouth because he is too slow. They must stay ONLY in a specific tank or with very large and calm fish like them.

In acquario necessita di una dieta pesantemente carnivora e proteica: grossi pellet affondanti di qualità, pezzetti di gambero intero, cozze sgusciate, krill, polpa di pesce bianco e lombrichi. ASSOLUTAMENTE sconsigliati pellet per Mbuna (erbivori).

Sex ratio: Gruppo ad Harem (1 Maschio Alpha e 4-6 femmine). Date le enormi dimensioni, due maschi si tollerano solo in vasche chilometriche (oltre i 1000 litri); in vasche più piccole il maschio beta sarà costantemente sotto stress, sbiadito e rintanato. Le femmine sono identiche per colorazione, solo fisicamente più piccole e con la "gobba" frontale meno accentuata.
Feeding frequency: 1 volta al giorno (O a giorni alterni per adulti). Mangiatori molto lenti; se abbinati a pesci voraci rischiano di deperire. Spesso gli allevatori devono spingere il cibo verso il fondo per assicurarsi che i Frontosa mangino a sufficienza.
Bioload: Altissimo (Massa biologica mostruosa per gli esemplari adulti di 14 pollici). L'imponente carico organico impone filtri esterni a bidone sovradimensionati e generosi cambi d'acqua.
Flow: Corrente da Moderata a Debole. Vivendo a 50 metri di profondità, detestano il moto ondoso turbolento.
Reproduction: Incubatori orali materni. A differenza della deposizione frenetica del Malawi, la danza del Frontosa è lentissima. Il maschio attira la femmina in una grossa caverna. L'uovo (che è gigantesco, tra i più grandi uova di ciclide) viene raccolto in bocca dalla femmina prima ancora che venga fecondato. Il maschio poi rilascia il seme e la femmina nuota attraverso la nuvola spermatica 'respirandola' per fecondare le uova che ha già in gola (fino a 5 settimane di incubazione).
Compatibility: Mantenimento Estremo. Solo con altri pesci del Tanganica o Malawi TROPPO GRANDI per essere mangiati ma altrettanto lenti e non iperattivi (es. Cyrtocara moorii). DIVIETO ASSOLUTO: Non metterlo MAI con Mbuna aggressivi o Tropheus. Questi pesciolini lo massacrerebbero di morsi, mangiandogli le pinne e tenendolo in uno stato di costante terrore psicologico.
