Description

Geographic Origin and Biotope: Magdalena and Maracaibo basins in Colombia and Venezuela. Swamps, canals, and slow-moving river bends, lurking motionless just below the surface.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Ctenoluciidae (Neotropical pike-characids). Missile-shaped body (20-25 cm in aquaria). Elongated snout armed with sharp, visible teeth. Dorsal and anal fins set far back for explosive ambush acceleration. Fleshy flaps on lower jaw detect surface vibrations.

Social Behavior: Surface ambush predator. Surprisingly gregarious and peaceful toward fish too large to swallow. Very skittish: if panicked, it will dash blindly into the aquarium glass, often fracturing its snout.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Brilliant silver body with a prominent black spot at the caudal base. Adult females are significantly plumper; males have a frayed-looking anal fin.

Care and observations

Tank Setup: 250+ liters (120+ cm long) with a SECURE lid to prevent jump escapes. Needs open surface swimming space buffered by floating plants to dim the light and reduce panic dashes. Moderate current.

Feeding: Piscivore/Insectivore. Often refuses dry food. Requires floating or slow-sinking meaty foods: crickets, frozen bloodworms, peeled shrimp, thawed silversides. DO NOT feed live feeder goldfish (disease risk).

Water Quality: Adaptable: pH 6.5-7.5, 22-28°C. Sensitive to high nitrates; strong filtration required.

Compatibility: Excellent community fish for large tanks. Peaceful with bottom dwellers (Geophagus, Plecos) and tall mid-water fish (Silver Dollars). Rule of thumb: any slender fish under 1/3 the Gar's length will be eaten. Best kept in groups of 3-5.

Reproduction: Rare. Surface courtship with thousands of scattered eggs. Parents will eat the eggs immediately if not separated.

Risks: Snout fractures from glass collisions are the most common clinical injury, leading to fatal mouth rot. Turn lights on gradually. Sensitive to copper and medications.
