Description

Geographical Origin & Biotope:

The Copperband Butterflyfish (*Chelmon rostratus*) is an iconic, highly elegant, and notoriously delicate marine teleost natively endemic to the warm, shallow coral reefs and rocky estuaries of the Indo-Pacific Ocean (prominently spanning from Australia to Japan). Their natural biotope is defined by densely structured, sunlit reef slopes and turbid coastal lagoons, where they tirelessly hunt for benthic invertebrates deeply entrenched in the complex coral framework.

Taxonomy & Morphology:

Scientifically classified within the Chaetodontidae (Butterflyfish) family, they possess a morphology exquisitely hyper-specialized for precision hunting. Fully mature adults reach 18.0 to 20.0 centimeters (7.0-8.0 inches) in total length. They possess a radically laterally compressed, deeply oval, "pancake-like" body. Their defining adaptation is a spectacularly elongated, tweezer-like snout designed exclusively to probe deep into tiny crevices to extract deeply hidden polychaete worms and small crustaceans.

Social Behavior:

They are exceptionally peaceful, slow-moving, and highly methodical hunters. They spend the entirety of their daylight hours hovering gracefully across the rockwork, meticulously inspecting every single millimeter of the reef with their large eyes, using their elongated snout to delicately pluck microscopic prey from holes. They are highly timid and easily stressed. They are generally peaceful toward all other species, but mature adults can become territorial toward other Butterflyfish.

Coloration & Sexual Dimorphism:

Sexual dimorphism is visually non-existent. Their coloration is an absolute masterpiece of marine evolution, designed for disruptive camouflage. The body canvas is a pure, pearlescent white, dramatically vertically bisected by four or five thick, glowing copper-orange bands edged in stark black. A massive, prominent black "eye-spot" (ocellus) dominates the upper rear portion of the dorsal fin, an evolutionary trick designed to confuse predators into attacking the wrong end of the fish.

Care and observations

Tank Setup:

The aquarium architecture MUST accommodate their absolute psychological need for mature foraging grounds. A minimum 450-liter (120-gallon) marine aquarium is strictly required. CRITICAL REQUIREMENT: The tank MUST be a massive, highly mature reef system (running flawlessly for at least 1-2 years) heavily aquascaped with 100+ lbs of highly porous live rock. They require an endless labyrinth of caves and crevices to constantly hunt naturally reproducing micro-fauna.

Diet & Feeding:

They are obligate micro-carnivores. CRITICAL WARNING: The Copperband Butterflyfish has one of the highest mortality rates in the hobby due to agonizing starvation. The vast majority of wild-caught specimens categorically REFUSE all prepared dry or frozen foods upon importation. They MUST be housed in a mature tank teeming with live "feather duster" worms and tiny crustaceans. To train them to eat frozen Mysis or live blackworms, aquarists often must smear food into a drilled PVC pipe.

Water Quality:

Originating from pristine Indo-Pacific reefs, they are exceptionally delicate and highly intolerant of poor water quality. They demand absolutely stable tropical heat (24-27°C / 75-81°F). Specific gravity (salinity) MUST be maintained precisely between 1.020 and 1.025. They require hard, highly alkaline water (pH 8.1 - 8.4) and absolutely zero ammonia or nitrites. They require moderate, gentle water flow; massive, turbulent flow will buffet their flat bodies and exhaust them.

Compatibility & Tankmates:

Compatibility requires expert planning due to their timid nature. REEF CAUTION: They are highly prized because they voraciously consume the pest anemone *Aiptasia*. However, they WILL unconditionally eradicate every single ornamental feather duster worm in the tank, and may occasionally nip at fleshy LPS corals (like Brains or Scolys). CRITICAL WARNING: They MUST NEVER be housed with fast, aggressive food competitors (Tangs, aggressive Wrasses) that will bully them to starvation.

Aquarium Breeding:

Breeding the Copperband Butterflyfish in captivity is currently impossible for home hobbyists and remains an unsolved challenge even for elite commercial marine aquaculture facilities. They are pelagic spawners, rising into the water column at dusk to release thousands of microscopic, buoyant eggs. The eggs hatch into incredibly specialized, armored larvae (the *tholichthys* stage) that drift in the open ocean for months. Rearing these delicate larvae remains beyond modern capabilities.

Risks & Diseases:

The absolute greatest physical risk is slow, agonizing starvation; purchasing a Copperband for a new, sterile tank is a guaranteed death sentence. ALWAYS ask the store to prove the fish is aggressively eating frozen Mysis before purchasing. Medically, they are highly susceptible to Marine Ich (*Cryptocaryon*) and Marine Velvet. CRITICAL MEDICAL WARNING: Like Angelfish, they are highly sensitive to Copper medications; if quarantine requires copper, it must be administered at half-doses.
