Description

Geographic Origin and Biotope: Vast Amazon and Orinoco basins. A strict surface hunter, lurking near quiet, overgrown river margins, using overhanging branches and floating plants for ambush cover.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Ctenoluciidae (Pike-characins). 30-35 cm biological torpedo. Perfectly cylindrical, ending in a hard, elongated bony beak packed with needle-sharp teeth. Features a small fleshy sensory flap at the tip of the upper jaw to detect surface ripples of struggling prey.

Social Behavior: Not a lone wolf. Must be kept in a loose school (4-5+). They hang motionless millimeters below the water surface like drifting sticks, exploding into blindingly fast lunges when prey is spotted.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Superb camouflage. Grey/olive back split cleanly from a silver belly, covered in a highly attractive pattern of dark spots/blotches. Females are noticeably bulkier when viewed from above.

Care and observations

Tank Setup: Demands MASSIVE footprint tanks: 150-180+ cm long (600+ liters) strictly to give them braking distance during lunges or panic. Floating plants and emergent wood are absolutely mandatory to prevent chronic skittishness. MUST HAVE A HEAVY LID: they jump with enough force to shatter thin glass.

Feeding: Surface Piscivore/Predator. SWALLOWS FISH WHOLE. Weaning to dead food requires extreme patience. Start juveniles on bloodworms, transitioning adults to strips of white fish, shelled prawns, or krill thrown forcefully onto the surface to mimic thrashing prey. NEVER feed live goldfish (disease and fatal thiaminase enzyme buildup).

Water Quality: Impeccable water required. pH 5.5-7.0 (struggles in alkaline water). Soft water, 24-28°C. High meat diet requires industrial-grade biological filtration.

Compatibility: Golden rule: anything that fits in its jaw (and Characins can stretch their jaws widely) will be eaten. Only compatible with large, peaceful Amazonians: big Geophagus, Severums, large Plecos. Do NOT keep with aggressive/nippy fish that will attack their delicate snouts.

Reproduction: Essentially impossible in home aquaria.

Risks: 1. IMPACT FATALITIES. The #1 cause of death. They are incredibly skittish. Sudden lighting changes or loud room noises will cause them to missile into the glass, breaking their jaws or necks instantly. 2. Starvation if kept singly. 3. Beak ulcerations from inadequate tank length.
