Striped Pike-Characin

Boulengerella lateristriga

A living torpedo designed for surface predation. Reaches 25 cm, featuring a long bony snout and immense speed. Stunning but incredibly skittish: requires massive tanks to prevent it from shattering its snout against the glass in a panic.

Description

Geographic Origin and Biotope: Vastly distributed across the Amazon and Orinoco basins. Occupies the upper layers of slow-moving rivers, flooded lakes, and oxbows, hovering motionless just beneath the surface among floating plants waiting to ambush small fish.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the Ctenoluciidae family (South American Pikes). Extremely elongated, rigid, and aerodynamic (up to 25 cm / 10 inches). The mouth is a formidable bony rostrum lined with needle-like teeth. The dorsal and anal fins are set far back near the tail, providing explosive ballistic propulsion for ambush strikes.

Social Behavior: Surface ambush predator. Surprisingly peaceful—as long as tankmates cannot fit in its mouth. Spends entire days perfectly motionless at the surface. However, it is chronically nervous: sudden lights, shadows, or loud noises cause sheer panic, making it dart forward blindly at terrifying speeds. This panic often results in the fish smashing into the glass and irreparably breaking its bony snout ('snout damage').

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Elegant camouflage. The back is olive/light brown. A solid, thick black longitudinal stripe runs directly from the tip of the snout all the way to the tail, sharply separating the silvery-white belly. A dark spot marks the tail base. No obvious sexual dimorphism, though gravid females are rounder.

Care and observations

Tank Setup: Demands massive swimming space: MINIMUM tank length is 150-180 cm (5-6 feet). A short tank is a death sentence (it will shatter its snout). A TIGHT, HEAVY LID IS MANDATORY as they are unstoppable jumpers. You MUST provide extensive floating plant cover (Water Lettuce, branches) to make them feel secure and dampen their flight reflex. Surface water flow should be very gentle.

Feeding: Strict Piscivore/Carnivore. In the wild, they eat exclusively live fish. In captivity, weaning them onto dead food requires immense patience. Use tongs to wiggle pieces of white fish fillet, thawed whole krill, jumbo bloodworms, and earthworms at the surface. Do not feed them cheap live 'feeder' goldfish (causes fatal B1 vitamin deficiencies and introduces parasites).

Water Quality: Intolerant of organic pollution, which quickly rots their delicate fins. Soft water, pH 5.5-7.0. Temp 24-28°C (75-82°F). Large, regular water changes are required. Ensure new water matches tank temperature perfectly to avoid triggering a panic response.

Compatibility: The golden rule of predators: it will swallow ANY fish that fits in its surprisingly stretchy throat. Best housed in peaceful 'Monster Fish' tanks with giant Plecos, calm large Cichlids (Severums, Geophagus, Uaru), and Freshwater Stingrays. While solitary ambushers, keeping a small group (3-4) actually significantly reduces their extreme skittishness.

Reproduction: Practically impossible and undocumented in home aquaria.

Risks: 1. BROKEN SNOUT: the most common and lethal injury caused by ramming the glass in tanks under 5 feet long. 2. Ballistic suicide (jumping out). 3. Starvation if they refuse to wean off live food. 4. Parasites/disease from live feeder fish.
