Plakat Betta

Betta splendens var. Plakat

The Plakat Betta is the short-finned form of the fighting fish. Not having the lethal ballast of long fins, it is a healthy, incredibly agile, muscular fish and is almost never subject to fin rot. This agility, however, makes it a formidable and lethal predator. Unlike the slow Halfmoon, a Plakat will actively hunt down and tear apart any shrimp or small fish in its tank. It needs a tightly sealed aquarium (it's an expert jumper) and a strictly carnivorous diet. It requires absolute isolation.

Description

The Death Leap (The Open Tank Futile Deaf Mute):

Because of its incredible caudal thrust, the Plakat is an evasion master. If you keep the tank open, it will jump out to catch a gnat or just to explore. Without a tight-fitting, heavy lid, its death by drying out on the floor is only a matter of time. Do not underestimate it.

Care and observations

The Shrimp Exterminator (The Community Illusion Futile Blind):

Many beginners, used to slow and clumsy Bettas, think the Plakat is harmless. FALSE. The Plakat has the speed of a dart. If you put it in a tank with shrimp (Neocaridina or Caridina) or timid small fish, it will become an unstoppable serial killer. It will kill for food and kill for territory, disemboweling anything that moves. A strictly single-species dedicated tank is MANDATORY.
