Koi / Galaxy Betta

Betta splendens var. Koi (Marble)

The Koi Betta is the ultimate frontier of Bettas. Usually short-finned (Plakat), it sports red, black and white patches resembling Koi carp. The Galaxy variant adds sparkling metallic scales. Its true magic is the "Marble" genetics: the fish will drastically mutate its colors throughout its life due to jumping genes. It is robust in swimming but genetically delicate: extreme selective breeding has made it frighteningly prone to developing fatal tumors.

Description

Color Change Panic (The Phantom Infection Futile Deaf Mute):

Carrying the unstable "Marble" gene, these fish undergo chromatic metamorphoses. You might go to sleep with a white fish with red spots, and find it two months later covered in gigantic black or midnight blue patches. IT IS NOT A DISEASE. Do not bombard the tank with antibacterial medications poisoning it to death, just admire the evolution.

Care and observations

The Genetic Condemnation and Tumors (The Nodule of Death Futile Blind):

The sad reality of the Koi/Galaxy strain is the immune collapse due to extreme inbreeding. About a third of these fish will develop, around one year of age, an asymmetrical lump on the flank, or a scaly outgrowth (melanoma). There is no cure for tumors in fish. If you buy a Koi, accept that its life could be dramatically shortened compared to a robust classic red Betta.
