Peaceful Betta

Betta imbellis

The Peaceful Betta (*Betta imbellis*) is the calm and elegant cousin of the infamous fighting fish (*Betta splendens*). As its scientific name suggests (imbellis means 'not warlike'), this superb wild-type species with its brilliant iridescent green and blue livery dispels the myth that all Bettas must be kept in isolation. Perfect for peaceful planted community aquariums, the Imbellis even allows multiple males to be kept in the same tank, provided there is sufficient space and cover, giving the aquarist the enchanting spectacle of their harmless ritual displays (flaring) without bloodshed.

Description

Geographical Origin & Biotope:

It has a wide distribution in Southeast Asia: it is native to southern Thailand (south of the Kra Isthmus), peninsular Malaysia, and northern Sumatra (Indonesia). Their habitats are slow-moving or completely stagnant waters, typically shaded by a dense forest canopy: peat swamps (blackwater), margins of overgrown agricultural canals, and warm, quiet flooded rice paddies.

Taxonomy & Morphology:

A member of the *Betta splendens complex* within the Osphronemidae family. Physically it is a natural *Plakat*: a tapered, slender, siluriform body, with short and sturdy fins designed for evasive swimming, rather than for the static ostentation of domestic varieties. The opercular muscles (gills) open frontally like a wide shield during displays.

Social Behavior:

Its behavior is elusive, intelligent, and extremely exploratory. It spends hours slipping between leaves and wood looking for micro-fauna to tear apart. Males, free from the innate hatred induced by human selection, establish hierarchies naturally and without trauma, allowing the aquarist to enjoy the social dynamic of the Betta genus.

Coloration & Sexual Dimorphism:

An iridescent jewel. The adult male has a base color ranging from dark brown to jet black, but is almost entirely covered by scales that refract an intense electric blue or emerald green light. The distinctive trait that differentiates it from other wild Bettas (like *smaragdina*) is the bright scarlet red sickle-shaped border on its rounded caudal fin, and the fact that the opercular stripes on the gills become red-blue. Females are noticeably different: brownish and camouflaged, lacking iridescence, often showing two dark horizontal lines along the body or vertical stripes when ready to spawn.

Care and observations

Tank Setup:

Although a single specimen can live in 30 liters (8 gallons), housing a small group (such as two males and three females, the best way to keep this species) requires an aquarium of 60-80 cm in length (60-80 liters / 15-20 gallons). The tank must be visually intricate to break lines of sight between males: provide dense thickets of stem plants, *Cryptocorynes*, and essential tangled bogwood with Java moss. Floating plants (*Frogbit*, *Salvinia*) are vital to shield the light and offer sites for bubble nests. Filtration must rely on a sponge filter or a minimized flow: strong currents will exhaust them. A tight-fitting lid is imperative to prevent jumping and to keep the air moist and warm above the water for their labyrinth organ.

Diet & Feeding:

As true wild insectivores and micro-predators, they will snub commercial dry food, especially right after being introduced to the tank. To see them shine and keep them healthy, their diet must be based on animal protein: red and white bloodworms, daphnia, and brine shrimp nauplii (live or frozen) are essential. They are skilled surface hunters: providing *Drosophila* (fruit flies) or live mosquitoes will stimulate their natural instincts and vigor.

Water Quality:

Originating from the lush peat swamps and swamp forests of Southeast Asia, they prefer warm (24-28°C / 75-82°F), soft (GH 1-8), and acidic waters, with an optimal pH between 5.5 and 7.0. They immensely appreciate a *Blackwater* setup with Catappa (Indian Almond) leaves or alder cones on the bottom; the released tannins protect their skin from bacterial and fungal infections and simulate the chemistry of their native, almost zero-flow habitats.

Compatibility & Tankmates:

This is where *Betta imbellis* shines. If the tank is long and planted enough, two or three males will coexist by establishing tiny territories. You will witness "flaring" (the extension of gills and fins to intimidate the rival), but the loser will simply swim away, with no torn scales. It coexists peacefully with peaceful micro-cyprinids like *Boraras brigittae*, *Trigonostigma*, and bottom-dwelling fish like small *Corydoras* (e.g., *pygmaeus* or *habrosus*) and *Pangio* loaches. However, they are easy prey for aggressive fish or large barbs that will nip their fins.

Aquarium Breeding:

It often occurs spontaneously in well-structured community tanks. The male builds a bubble nest under a large floating leaf. After the nuptial embrace and the gathering of sinking eggs, the male gently chases (not lethally like *splendens*) the female away and guards the eggs alone. The fry need infusoria.

Risks & Diseases:

Compared to fragile commercial show variants, the Imbellis has an armored immune system if kept in acidic, amber water. The primary risk is stress caused by hard, alkaline, and fast-moving waters, as well as a very high propensity to jump out of the tank if frightened.

Fish profile

Temperament
Pacifico e gregario (eccezionale per un Betta). I maschi si esibiscono in parate visive mozzafiato ma raramente arrivano allo scontro fisico.
Diet
Carnivoro puro.

Sex ratio
Prospera in coppia o in piccoli gruppi. In vasche adeguate (80+ litri) è possibile tenere 2-3 maschi e diverse femmine assieme per assistere alle loro parate competitive innocue.
Feeding frequency
1-2 volte al giorno in piccole quantità. Prestare attenzione a non sovralimentarli per evitare costipazioni.
Bioload
Molto Basso
Flow
Corrente Nulla o Quasi Nulla
Jump risk
Covered tank required
Reproduction
