The *Aulonocara jacobfreibergi* (often commercialized in its flaming selective line variant 'Eureka Red') is the bad boy of the Peacocks family. While most peacocks (like the stuartgranti) are docile, inhabit sandy plains and prefer peace, the jacobfreibergi lives holed up in gigantic dark rocky crevasses. Evolution has endowed it with a shocking livery: the male has a metallic body (often fire orange, red or sulfur yellow depending on the locale) torn by wide deep blue or purple vertical bands, with the lower fins heavily contoured by a dazzling pure white. Precisely because of its cave-dwelling habitat, it possesses the most aggressive and territorial nature of the entire Aulonocara genus, making it a demanding guest but with unsurpassed chromatic charm.

Description

Violent Courtship:

Care and observations

The Curse of Similarity (Do Not Mix Peacocks):

Mandatory rule of Cichlids: "There can be only one". If you buy this stupendous red-blue Aulonocara, and you are tempted to pair it with a blue-yellow Aulonocara because "they are of the same breed and get along", you have thrown away your money. The Jacobfreibergi is the meanest bully of all Aulonocaras. He will see the other Peacock as an unacceptable intruder: he will beat it to death depriving it of food or, in the best case, he will make it fade into mouse-grey canceling all its fantastic colors.

The Caveman Who Hates Strong Light:

Unlike its cousins who live on the sand plains in the sun, this fish is a rock bat. In nature it lives in dark deep crevasses upside down. In the aquarium you MUST form a large closed and dark dome using large slabs of rock. If you put hyper-powerful LED lights on it (for a planted aquarium) and you don't provide a shady rocky roof, the fish will go crazy with stress, lose all the phosphorescent red becoming dark, and will never come out from behind the filter.

Beware of Lethal Vegan Feeds:

Even if you see it holed up in the rocks like the herbivorous Mbunas, this cichlid has a carnivorous stomach. If you feed it algae tablets, spirulina or vegetables, it will waste away drastically, weakening until it gets sick with intestinal parasites and dies. It requires a high protein and fat intake (Artemia and Krill in pellets and frozen).

Temperament: Aggressivo (per gli standard Aulonocara). Se gli altri Pavoni sono pacifici, lui è il signorotto mafioso della caverna. Diet: Micro-predatore Carnivoro. Setaccia la sabbia all'ingresso della caverna per catturare larve e crostacei bentonici. Assolutamente intollerante a diete puramente vegetali. Alimentazione base con granulati premium ad alto contenuto di proteine acquatiche (farina di pesce, krill intero) e dosi frequenti di surgelato misto (Mysis, Daphnia).

Sex ratio: Harem Rigido (1 maschio e 3-4 femmine). In vasche standard MAI mettere due maschi di Jacobfreibergi: il dominante sventrerà l'altro in una guerra per la grotta migliore. Anche in questo caso, la femmina è un banalissimo pesciolino color argilla-topo marrone opaco (necessario mimetismo per sopravvivere ai predatori nelle rocce).
Feeding frequency: 1-2 volte al giorno, fornendo pellet affondanti rapidamente (Spesso rubano il cibo a pesci più lenti o timidi).
Bioload: Medio-Alto (Taglia notevole, quasi 15 cm per i maschi adulti molto vecchi).
Flow: Corrente da Moderata a Lieve sul fondo. Vivendo nelle grotte, rifuggono le forti correnti a getto diretto, preferendo acque stabili e calme dove 'ascoltare' la sabbia.
Reproduction: Incubatori orali materni. La brutalità del maschio è pericolosa durante il corteggiamento: attrarrà la femmina nella grotta a furia di tremolii e morsi sui fianchi. Se la femmina non è pronta a deporre, o se non ci sono abbastanza femmine "bersaglio", il maschio la perseguiterà fino a farla ammalare gravemente di stress.
Compatibility: Convivenza Esplosiva (Richiede abbinamenti esperti). È l'unico Aulonocara che riesce a tenere vagamente testa ai Ciclidi Mbuna più tranquilli (es. Labidochromis caeruleus), ma l'abbinamento resta sconsigliato. Mantenetelo come Re Incontrastato in vasche di Ciclidi Haps (es. Protomelas o Placidochromis) facendo MOLTA attenzione a non abbinarlo mai ad altri Aulonocara: li dominerebbe distruggendone i colori.
